METAL JESUS ROCKS!: Check Your Vector, Victor

With the release of Nintendo's Wii-U last month, it would seem that a new cycle has been kicked off in the twice-per-decade ritual that is the console wars. Honestly though, today's struggle for dominance in the gaming marketplace seems more regional skirmish than battle royale, especially when you compare it to the chaos that was the early 80s videogame scene. By the time the radical decade rolled around, there were no fewer than 12 major players, each pushing their own game system and titles on to increasingly crowded store shelves.

Among those, probably no console was more unique than Milton Bradley's Vectrex. This all-in-one little gem was the first (and remains the only) home console to utilize a true vector graphics display. Whereas the Vectrex's competitors mostly hooked up to a TV and displayed traditional raster-based graphics, the Vectrex's built-in monitor used the same technology employed by some of the most popular arcade games of the day (such as Asteroids and Tempest) to produce what were at the time some truly mind-blowing visuals. Unfortunately, after just 2 years on the market the Vectrex succumbed to the great crash along with most of the other competitors in the gaming industry. Thus the console remains relatively scarce and systems have only been getting more expensive to acquire as the years tick by.

Thankfully, for those who would like to get a taste of the vector glory that once was without having to shed their gold fillings to buy in, there is now an excellent alternative. On this week's episode of METAL JESUS ROCKS!, the golden god-son reviews the newly-released Vectrex Regeneration app for iOS devices. Do the pretty line-graphics and simple gameplay still hold up when running on a modern platform with touch controls? Or will the nostalgia goggles not be strong enough to overcome 30-years worth of wrinkles? Check out this week's video to find out:

I've been trying in vain to find a Vectrex at a decent price for over a year now, and it's just crazy what people are asking for one in good working condition. Wish I'd grabbed a bunch of them at yardsales 20 years ago for $5 a piece.

Recently somebody on Craigslist was selling 10 Vectrex carts for only $50, which seemed like a good deal...until I saw that none of them came with the overlays. I don't yet own a Vectrex, but it seems inevitable. However I passed on the ad because after playing this emulator, it's the overlays that is 30% of the experience.

Yeah, you see loose carts for $5 all the time at expos and the like. It's the CIB copies that will absolutely kill you if you start to collect. (Or at least so I've heard. <glances over at empty space on game system shelf> )

Also..it's worth noting that their are over 40 homebrew games made for the Vectrex and most of them will eventually get released for this app. That's a pretty damn good value IMHO.

I so need to get an iCade (and mini). Are they out with the lightning connector yet?

Anyway, awesome as usual MJ. I like the shorter shows, I can watch them as a break from work and then get back into it.

The iCade uses wireless Bluetooth to connect to your iPad/iPhone...so no physical connection required.

Thanks for the compliment on the videos. Typically I try to keep them only as long as they need to be, but I understand how nice it is to keep them snack sized and under 10 minutes. Funny though because YouTube & Google want them to be longer, so it's easier to get big advertising dollars.

You have NO IDEA how much I wanted one of these when I was 5. Never got one of course. And that deprivation led to the depravity of having 1000+ console games in my living room.

Bring it to Android.... I just bought a Kindle Fire HD, because I'm a slave to Amazon anyway.

The original vectrex shines light back at the user with the explosive force of a thousand suns. Does the app capture this?

That is my concern too. The light and the lingering glow is what made it so cool.
