PC RPG Divinity: Original Sin 2 Hits Nearly 500K In Sales After Strong Release

Divinity: Original Sin II came out just a few days ago, but it's been in Steam Early Access for almost a year. Now, publisher and developer Larian Studios is sharing some sales data, telling Eurogamer the game has sold nearly 500,000 copies in total. 180,000 of those sales have come since its 1.0 release on September 14.

"We're close to hitting 500K units sold, which is a number I believe took us two or three months with Divinity: Original Sin 1," said Swen Vincke, owner of Larian Studios. The game has also hit a milestone in terms of concurrent players on Steam, reaching nearly 86,000 players at one time. At the time of this writing, it's the fourth most-played game on Steam. The response has been unexpected, Vincke told Eurogamer. Servers have struggled to handle the large number of players, but "we should have them up and running again soon," he said.

Vincke also commented on possible console releases in the future. The company had indicated it was waiting to see how the game sold on PC before deciding to release on other systems and, right now, that PC version still remains the focus, he said.

A new modern computer RPG classic. The turn-based elemental/environment combat; plethora of options/paths; funny dialog (get the Pet Perk!); and it looks and runs great. I'm playing my first run exclusively with close family, we all love it. Having each player with their own musical instrument that is woven into the battle music during key events. Being able to reclass a character into whatever you want when they join your party. There is so much to love about this game.

I was really excited about the first, kickstarted the additional content and everything. But the slow overland movement absolutely killed the game for me before I even got out of the first chapter. I couldn't handle moving at a snail's pace.

I mean, it felt so fucking slow I couldn't stand to play the game past the first hour. I don't need warp speed but I needs something faster than molasses in January.

That's great for them, and well-earned! But Larian can't be serious here:

If they're close to 500,000, but "only" sold 180,000 units since release, they had more than 300,000 pre-orders. What did they think those people would do at launch? THIS is why many developers still need publishers, even in the digital age...

Been playing daily since launch and haven't experienced any problems with the servers. The game did crash on me a couple of times, locking me out of Windows 10 completely (could not end task). Besides that, I would consider this is a pretty smooth ride.

I've put maybe 20 or so hours in so far and totally loving it. This Baldur's Gate/Fallout (the real one) style play is something I really enjoy and they have absolutely nailed it.
