Dead Cells Set To Hit Steam Early Access with Permadeath on May 10th, Trailer

Click on the Headline for the Trailer.

Quote:
Death is the new backtracking! The upcoming RogueVania game Dead Cells from the developers at Motion Twin will be available via Steam Early Access on May 10, 2017.

RogueVania: The threat of permadeath, balanced with a generous system of progression, the exhilaration of discovering new hidden areas, alternate paths to progress through the castle and a pinch of procedural generation to keep you on your toes.

Our main character is a green mass of sentient cells stranded on an ever changing island. The player must take over a discarded corpse and explore the prison, where survival is a precarious and ephemeral state. Death, however, is only the beginning in this alchemy afflicted world... just one more opportunity to unlock new powers, discover outlandish areas and plunder hidden secrets.

This looks great... apart from the huge pixels. Seriously, do these developers think that artists in the early 90s WANTED to use sub-SVGA resolutions? And if that's the case, why not go 4:3? I know pixel art gets exponentially more time-consuming (and thus, expensive) with increasing resolution, but at least give us something like 800 x 450 (or 600) instead of 480 x 270 (or whatever this is)!

Unless we get a PSP version, of course. In that case, all is forgiven!

Actually, that looks like 16-bit retro. I'm fine with this. Anything but that weird... Atari nostalgia we saw a few years back. The fuck was that?! I mean, I would prefer 32-bit nostalgia, where we had games that looked like living cartoons and everyone was happy but hey, at least we're headed in the right direction.

I absolutely love the art. combat looks fun, as long as it's tight and rewarding not frustrating and punishing. I'll have to check this one out. Thanks for the share.

A "RogueVania" with perma-death? Not likely...

negative.

So I grabbed the alpha and what's there is really enjoyable. Assuming a reasonable price when it hits EA I'll be a backer for sure.
