In Theory: Could Sony Release PlayStation 5 in 2018?

Eurogamer has the story.

Quote:
Could Sony be releasing its next-gen PlayStation in 2018? That's the notion put forward by Maquarie Capital Securities analyst Damian Thong, cited in a recent edition of The Wall Street Journal. But is the time right to replace PlayStation 4? And what kind of hardware could Sony conceivably deliver next year?

First up, it's worth pointing out that Thong is credited with predicting PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro, making him a creditable source. However, a comprehensive look through Google's news archive doesn't appear to show any prediction for the Pro that predates Kotaku's initial PlayStation 4.5 exclusive. Also worth pointing out is that Thong's prediction is nothing new - he made the same claims about a prospective PlayStation 5 launch last September. Did he predict the PS4 Slim? It certainly looks like it, but then again, Sony has made physically smaller iterations of every one of its previous consoles. That said, his CV certainly looks first-class and clearly, he knows his onions.

We can add some additional flavour to the speculation as we spoke to PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny last year, where he was very specific about how PS4 Pro was not a next-gen console, sharing with us the criteria he has for what constitutes a new console generation. Games hardware is years in the making - work on PS4 began in 2008 - so we can safely assume that his words do have some bearing on what to expect from the next PlayStation, which is almost certainly in the works now, even if a 2018 launch does seem unlikely.

"Each new generation brings with it a new set of capabilities: CPUs, GPUs and the like but also controllers and new types of display devices. If you go back to the 1970s, it was colour TV. That was the new display device," Cerny told us. "These capabilities unlock new potential for the type of games that can be created. For example, increased CPU power might not seem like a game-changer but it actually allows for much better enemy AI, more enemy characters, better world simulation and a whole host of other evolutions in the game experience."
Read on.

It feels like they have no choice except to release a new PlayStation in 2018 because they need to take some wind out of the Scorpio sails or they will risk their gamer base defecting back to the company they all abandoned this generation.

The PS4 can't just limp along because once the first "Scorpio only" game comes out and it blows the doors off what you can do on the PS4 it will change the whole story.

5 years isn't an unreasonable time window for a console generation. It was only 4 from Xbox to 360, and PlayStation did 6 year generations until the 7 year run for the PS3.

Hopefully, the increasingly digital natural of game purchases will lead to a new renaissance of backward compatibility . . .

Or we're doomed

If that news is true, say goodbye to further PS4 sales. Watch for the heavy denial from Sony.

If the hardware is still putting out decent games, I don't see a reason to upgrade. I still have a ton of PS3 titles I have yet to even start up. I'm still good, and I'm not buying yet another new system just to play one or two exclusives. Jeez, I have a PS3, Wii and Dreamcast all hooked up to my TV. I don't need to keep getting new consoles every couple of years.

This is why I am not too fond of consoles. I have one computer that plays all my PC games, but I have to have multiple consoles if I want to play all my console games (or I can buy them again)? No thanks.

I could see it being the case if they make it backwards compatible but even then tge ps4 is just hitting the sweet spot where awesome games from smaller studios are coming out. Id hate to see a refresh only to get 2 year game drought where everyone struggles with development for new hardware. Some of the best games for ps1-3 came out at the end of the life cycle so I really think upgrading too early is a mistake.

If it's backwards compatible with the PS4 I will preorder one. No BC and I will go Xbox. Sony is out of excuses now.

They're not releasing a PS5 next year. They'll position the Pro as their front-runner and trudge along a couple more years. They might announce another console next year, for a 2019 release. Wouldn't be surprised to see a PS5 Holiday 2020 though.

Would be nice if they went the upgrade every few years route instead of a full-on new gen.

Maybe they'll drop a new handheld to compete with Switch?

No regret from my Pro here. Don't even own a 4k tv. It is epic. Not compared to my 1080ti hybrid, but EPIC none-the-less.

Sony needs to Play the Nintendo Card where hardware in 4K isn't a widespread mass market appeal. The Wii sold well with poor hardware, because it was fun. Microsoft can shoot themselves in the foot with this Scorpio price if Sony Discounts the Pro. Screenshot comparisons vs PC now against the PRO are extremely minor.

Sony needs a marketing campaign. Their current Pro Console is amazing and looks superb. Microsoft is still fighting a losing battle. When 60 fps is consistent at 4k, then Sony should consider an upgrade. That cost per performance isn't quite here yet.

"blows the doors off what you can do on the PS4"? When I look at my PC with a 1080 playing For Honor vs my PS4 playing the same game, there is such minor differences I can't imagine Scorpio being any better. My PC specs far better than Scorpio, and the PS4 looks amazing.

Releasing PS5 that soon would be a nice "fuck you" to anyone who made the upgrade to the Pro.

2018 also mean HOLIDAY 2018, with is 1 and a half years... five year cycle... doubtful. Sony hasn't ever really played by that. Also, there isn't really tech there for them to go after. The PC market is doing their own thing at this time, and as long as we keep getting console ports, whatever.

The PS4 launched in November 2013. November 2018 is five years later.

The days of new hardware 'blowing the doors off' are behind us now. We're 3 (4?) years into this gen now and only just are we seeing stuff that is clearly beyond 360/ps3 graphically.

Also it's not like Sony can have their hand forced. MS are in such a shit state right now and PS4 is still selling gangbusters. Scorpio may end up being a massive flop if MS don't have a good E3 in which case Sony will stick with the Pro for at least 3 more years.
