Superman Star Henry Cavill Says "Mistakes Have Been Made" With The DC Universe

GameSpot has the story.

Quote:
Although DC's cinematic universe has been hugely popular at the box office, it has been less kindly received by critics. Wonder Woman was a hit with both fans and reviewers, but the likes of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad were met with much criticism. Now, Superman star Henry Cavill has spoken about the state of the DC universe and admitted that "mistakes" have been made.

In an interview with The Rake, Cavill said that DC's problems were more than just a comparison with superhero rivals Marvel. "Even if Marvel didn't exist, we'd struggle," he admitted. "There was a style [DC was] going for, an attempt to be different and look at things from a slightly different perspective, which hasn't necessarily worked. Yes, it has made money, but it has not been a critical success; it hasn't given everyone that sensation which superheroes should give the viewer.

"I feel like now the right mistakes have been made and they haven't been pandered [to], and we can start telling the stories in the way they need to be told. It is even better to come back from a mistake or stylistic error into the correct vein because it will make it seem that much stronger. Wonder Woman was the first step in the right direction."

So if Justice League has the same lack of character development and terrible plot that Suicide Squad did we'll know if he's right or just blowing smoke.

Of course mistakes were made, they started this whole thing off for the wrong reason to begin with.

I would say starting with casting him as Superman. He has the personality of a door mat. Chris Reeves had humor, looks and a sense of moral superiority. Cavil’s Superman is none of those.

Cavils Superman is awesome, they f'd up by cramming Doomsday in that movie, that should have been separate/later. And they did it wrong.

I think that almost everything is wrong with the current Superman. His Dad was a whiny asshat who basically wanted him to never ever use his powers under any circumstances, his Clark Kent has zero personality and his Superman is this kinda moody emo version more like the Evil Superman from Superman III after he was exposed to the tobacco-kryptonite.

And look at his relationship with Lois? Half the fun of the whole Superman/Clark Kent thing is that Lois is fawning over Superman and Clark is kinda envious of himself. They lose that entire aspect of the character by having Lois be in on his identity. And they still ignore the fact that everyone on the planet (except Lex Luther, Batman, Wonder Woman and everyone else who has ever met both of them) canít see past a disguise that is nothing more than a pair of glasses. They tried to explain that a bit by saying that they couldnít get a clear photo of him, then in BvS he just shows up to Congress and stands around with cameras rolling. Oops.

Thatís without even going into the idea that he freaking KILLED someone.

I love Zack Snyderís visual style, but he got pretty much everything else about Superman wrong.

The best thing they could do for the character now is re-cast it with someone who has more flair and make the movies a lot more light hearted. Superman kinda has to be lighthearted because really he is the most powerful super hero in the universe. No on stands a chance next to him so you humanize him by giving him a sense of humor, not by making him an angsty teenager.

Oh and did you guys see the Shazam casting? Snooze. I love the DC characters more than Marvel, but Warner Bros totally needs someone else in charge of the franchise. They are just making one bad movie after another and one bad casting decision after another.

It is like they have never read a Captain Marvel comic. Captain Marvel is a KID in the body of an adult. That is why The Rock would have been genius casting, he totally could have pulled that off. You cast him opposite some kid, like one of the kids from Stranger Things as the kid version of Captain Marvel and then have The Rock be the adult version and you would have made mad bank. Instead it will be another average-to-poor quality DC movie.

It is hard to believe they got so lucky with the casting of Batman, Harley and the Joker and then they cut like 90% of Harley & Joker’s scenes from Suicide Squad.

I would write a Legion of Super Heroes script for Warner Bros, but I just know they would find some way to cock it up. LOL.

I agree. I loved his first film as Superman. Did not enjoy BvS, but I don't blame him for that. The pacing and length were just ALL wrong in that painful snorefest of a film...

As a lifelong Superman fan, Cavill is my favorite rendition of him. He's perfect. I'm glad this Superman has actual emotions, and isn't just a cardboard cutout boy scout. Superman is my favorite superhero, always has been since watching Christopher Reeve as a kid and reading his comics since the 80's.

Man of Steel is one of my favorite movies. Its so damn awesome. I could go into details but I won't. I've taken film classes and regularly give examples of amazing scenes in that film. BvS's opening scene in Africa was another example of how badass he is. I'm also glad he killed Zod; too many times in comics and movies he holds back. I loved how he immediately hated having to do it as well, but he had no choice in that moment. He screams NO louder and with more emotion than Darth Vader ever did.

Anyways, even if Justice League doesn't tickle everyone's pickle, I believe he's talking about from this point forward. JL obviously had drama with Snyder's daughter dying and I hate that Joss Whedon took it over. If I don't like it it will be because of Whedon's annoying bullshit. It may be okay in his other movies (although not to me), but I've really enjoyed Snyders' films from Dawn of the Dead and on (except the owl cartoon).

Anyways, I will always love the Christopher Reeve Superman, but Cavill is the best Superman we've had on film.

I agree. MoS was an amazing movie. I do have some qualms about his killing Zod and the destruction porn but in general it was a great take on Superman.

I have a lot of loyalty to Reeve but Cavill does not disappoint. A lot of the writing in BvS wasn't worthy and Batman got the best of that movie but MoS is still probably one of the most nuanced DC movie to date.

Even if Wonder Woman is still the better fun DC popcorn movie it didn't stand up as well as I had hoped to repeated viewings like MoS does.
