Correction (was unclear)
*The last part of the OP Post of this thread just seems like trolling, honestly.

Funny.. I think the reason its "already more popular with gamers" is because it auto installed on systems and the average person didn't know any better not to install it yet. It's not like they made a conscience effort to install it. It just did it itself.
As for the debate Linux vs windows, who cares as long as the games work...

I still haven't gotten my upgrade notification. I could download the .iso but I want to try the standard process, in case someone else I know has a problem along the way.

@Rommel

This *is* how you manually trigger the standard process! http://redd.it/3fnsvr

My 2p on the subject of life and everything:

SteamOS = Right pile of crap. Pointless to the point of being more pointless. I'd imagine people installing it as they're bored.
Linux = "Right I'm moving to Linux rant rant" - Stays on Windows
Ubuntu = I really want to like it and every six months or so I install, for a laugh, prod things, try to do x or y and give up finding things amusing. Looks nice though
Windows = I'm glad the platform exists as anything else would be a REALLY BIG MESS for awhile especially for business users
OSX = What's that? How much market share?
iOS = You might as well get rid of OSX and just use iOS on macs

Either way they all have strengths and weaknesses and, in all honesty, we could probably use any of them as most guys just use computers for Pron. Me... I use them to write, to develop, use VMs, mild music and video editing. A wide range. Plus I'm admin of a small company.

Well done MS. No matter what hate comes your way you still work and work well.

P.s. Imagine if OSX had the same market share. Apple would cry

P.s. I love how easily Windows gets infected with malware or viruses while the people complaining run with FULL ADMIN privileges.

Hint: Create two accounts. One full admin (Security) and the other a standard account (Family). Change UAC (Yes that security feature you disabled) to full and, when you want to do something on the Family account you're prompted for the security password. Yes you can still get into trouble but at least you've added that protective layer to save your computer from yourself and the kids.

P.P.s Also change the pop-up blocker in IE to HIGH instead of medium. No real need to change browser... Oh you've installed Chrome? Cool. Welcome to added services and no more protection than IE (Fixed a lot of computers with Chrome)

That is a very convoluted way to force install.

This one is much easier.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10

Download the tool, select "install now" and.. that's it.

Convoluted, yes. But you are talking about the media creation tool, which can also force the upgrade. This is - as I understood it - not what he wants.

It does the exact same thing, except the media creation tool forces an upgrade without going through windows update, so it works faster and actually shows you what its doing in real time, instead of the nebulous upgrade approach.

this should be labeled as the guide for your parents, or perhaps their parents.

it says there you need a key (I'm not home so I haven't tested it yet) but do you need a key? the 8.1 key or did they send you a key? I'm lost

I used Syl's method and it worked fine.

Also there's no need to do a fresh install these days.

It will take an embed of your already valid Windows key, be it 7 Professional or whatever and turn it into a Windows 10 key. If you have 7 Professional after the upgrade it'll be a Windows 10 Professional key, just as an example. No need for input from you.

The method I linked is an upgrade directly via Windows update; which all users should receive at some point.

The method with the media creation point does this too, but works a bit differently but if you choose to upgrade the system directly the result should be the same. No point in downloading the iso via that anyway, you can just download those directly.

And using an iso will ask you for a key. Currently you *have* to upgrade.

@anemone while I agree, there's still the open issue what one can do with your original upgraded license and a new or repaired computer, then. We do not have a key beyond the generic upgrade key and can not do a fresh install on different hardware (while that may be acceptable e.g. in the U.S. it is against the law in EU).

You just hit "next" when it asks for a key. Repeatedly. Then when you're done installing it says activated. *shrugs*

Ah SpectralThundr answered that, thanks.
Still, has anyone confirmed that a converted key will work on new hardware?

Also, once you upgrade to windows 10 through an existing OS (7 or 8) , you can use the same key for a fresh install anywhere. It's an extra step in the process but its how things are being handled at the moment.
