I am a big big big 80s fan! I started listening to the radio in the 80s and it set my music preferences in stone. I'll listen to most but I always go back to the 80s bubblegum pop and some of the most iconic songs and artists we know of today today came from the 80s.

I also lived in the UK during a good part of that time and they had basically outlawed rock music, there was one pirate radio station broadcasting off the south coast I could get on my radio and I could buy some records on base but that was about it.

Of course the 80s also was a great era for hair metal.

Someone already posted Twisted Sister but there were so many others... both well known and those that had just a brief moment in the sun.

And Tawny Kitaen was the poster girl for a whole generation of boys...

And of course another anthem though not exactly a hair metal...

And the ballads and slow songs... wow. From all over the chart and almost every genre. Some were way over played, others are evergreen, others faded into obscurity and are rarely heard today.

Let's not forget about the movies. The soundtracks that drove the 80s and cemented names like Kenny Loggins into the minds of people who had never heard of songs like "Whenever I call you friend."

Nope. We knew him for:

and, of course

And they brought a second life to some songs like this one from the infamous dance in Risky Business:

Some took me forever to track down because I couldn't find them when I was a kid, like this one from Zug Izland which was on The Lost Boys soundtrack:

And one that will make money forEVER:

There are soooo many artists and songs I missed, like Flashdance (What a feeling) and Berlin (Take my Breath Away), and Pat Benatar and tons of other bands across the punk and the burgeoning rap genre.

But I'll finish with these last few oddities. Chess was one of the first sort of theater production soundtracks I can remember going mainstream. Now Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and others have reached a fair level of popularity but One Night in Bangkok got a lot of airplay which is unusual for a song written for the stage.

Rock me Asmodeus was released with the German/Austrian lyrics and became hugely popular on the mainstream radio which was equally rare. I believe it was the biggest foreign language hit on the US radio hit since "La Bamba"

The rest are just a few fun ones I threw in.

And who can forget this one?

1979 but close enough I give them an honorary 80s status!

(as an aside, the Rapper's Delight video was done in ONE TAKE!!)

There were earlier versions, but Willie's is the definitive one for me.
