Microsoft Unlocks Xbox Live Online Play, Just In Time For Battlefront 2 Beta

GameSpot has the story.

Quote:
Those without an Xbox Live Gold membership can currently enjoy the core benefit--online multiplayer--free of charge. Microsoft has unlocked online play to all Xbox Live users for the next few days, which is excellent timing with the Star Wars Battlefront II open beta now live.

From now until Monday, October 9, at 11:59 PM PT (2:59 AM ET/7:59 AM BST), a Free Play Days For All event is active. This allows you to play games online on both Xbox One and Xbox 360 without paying for Xbox Live Gold.

Multiplayer should be free on all consoles.

There are 55 Million Bone subscribers. X $10 a month. 550 Million a month? Is that right?

$6.6 Billion a year from subscriptions? That cant be right. That's a bunch of dam money.

And on top of that I doubt it costs more than 50-100 million WITH all the support people, hardware, electricity, etc to keep it up and running. The marketing budget is likely much larger.

As I recall it's 55 million members, not necessarily subscribers. I'm not sure when they specifically broke out their subscription numbers from their live revenue in general and my eyes bleed when I look at the MS financials.

Also the cost is $50 per year (easily found on sale for cheaper: $40 right now at many locations), not $120 per year so closer to $3 - $4 a month, not $10.

In addition to the standard upkeep, support, and maintenance for the hardware, software, and staff don't forget feature/future development costs and developer support costs to help partners integrate live properly and, as someone said: Marketing.

Full Disclosure: I worked closely with MGS and MGS Platform team on many Xbox LIVE capable products covering OG Xbox LIVE and X360.

Perfectly stated. Networking gear is expensive. Quality networking gear even more-so. Quality networking gear that capably support the needs of the network in an agile way is crazy-expensive.

I'm not associated with any MSFT facilities, but work in a "Oh, another 60 pallets of servers?" place.

Isn't Live already running in Azure? If it's not will someone please smack Microsoft?

If it is, they are leveraging their own cloud which is becoming more and more profitable every year with new sign ups from companies migrating to off-prem infrastructure. Therefore, Microsoft is running on cheap infrastructure, it's own.

Okay, just spent about 15 minutes with the game.

Meh....

Great use of the franchise, but it just felt slow and imprecise.

Edit...

Well, I WAS a stormtrooper, so I guess they got it right!

The only time Stormtroopers were inaccurate was when they were ordered to let the heroes escape the first Death Star in order to lead the Empire to the hidden base.

They spent most of Empire being pretty badass and once again started missing because they were luring Luke into Vader's trap.

Stormtroopers ain't that bad.

I second that. My wife and I loved that game.
