Back from the movie! It was pretty decent, but they totally showed you the entire film in the trailers.

There was literally nothing you didn't see in the various trailers that came out. I could have just watched the trailers again and saved myself the price of a ticket.

Good film!

I agree with Pacer, best James Franco acting ever! (Next to his acting in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Heh.)

Saw it Thursday night. I enjoyed it, but you're right that the trailers gave away too much. Also, this was definitely the best Franco movie I've ever seen. He was stellar.

The movie was utter shit and Ridley Scott needs to retire from directing. If you like stupid predictable movies pretending to be smart (Prometheus) then you might like this. If you like mysterious, scary, original movies with interesting believable characters (Alien) then stay far far away. Another embarrassing installment in a battered franchise that should have been buried 20 years ago.

One review of the film that liked it.

Quote:
If this sounds a bit like a variation on the plot of every “Alien” film ever, that’s because it is. The series’ repetitive structure is a feature, not a bug, as in the James Bond, "Star Wars" and Marvel franchises. If you don’t like them, you can complain that they recycle the same images and situations. But if you like them, you can compare them to sonatas or sonnets or three-chord pop songs, where part of the fun lies in seeing what variations the artists can bring while satisfying a rigid structure. The ritualized beats of the “Alien” movies offer many such scenarios, including initial landing on the dark planet, the first alien attack, the realization that a character that you thought was part of the team is actually treacherous, the escape from the complex that’s about to be wiped out, and the second ending that happens when you thought the story was over.

This one has a lot of nifty variations, most revolving around Fassbender’s dual performance.
It follows a predictable form, but it's quite enjoyable if you are a fan of the form that the Alien series follows in each iteration. Worth a watch IMO.

I think that the predictable cycle of these movies is wearing them down. There is a story here, the story of David and the Aliens, but we are getting a tiny piece of the most interesting part of the story in each film instead of getting one sweeping epic about how man created David and David turned on Man the way the Engineers created Humanity and turned on Humanity.

That's the huge overall epic storyline we want to see and it is buried in a gore porno where monsters burst out of your chest (or head). It's too little of the good stuff and too much running around hallways and screaming -- only without most of the tension that made the first Alien such a huge success.

My Dad's comment was "at least the last 15 minutes were good" and that's pretty accurate.

I enjoyed Prometheus even though it is a pretty flawed film, and I enjoyed this one. It looks like it barely topped the weekend Boxoffice with a $65 million opening weekend, barely edging out Guardians of the Galaxy. Next weekend Pirates opens up and the weekend after that is Wonder Woman, who will face a rough Holiday weekend with so many other good films to choose from. I think the prediction that Wonder Woman will do $95 million is pretty laughable. I'm expecting it to do the original $65 million estimate, but I do suspect it will be a lot less unless you include Monday in your box office total (which would kinda be fair given that it's a 3-day weekend).

I'm heading out to see Pirates this weekend and probably will end up going to Wonder Woman, Planet of the Apes and Spider-Man -- and probably Valerian too. My Dad was joking that we should just go to the movies every Saturday since there is so much coming out this summer.

I agree with this critique. I really wanted to know more about why the engineers turned on humanity, why David turned on the engineers (and what he learned about them as he traveled to their homeworld), etc..

Still, I enjoyed it in the same way that I enjoyed Prometheus. It felt incomplete, but better incomplete than nonexistent.

I guess in the deleted scene version of the Engineer scene in Prometheus, Wayland tells the Engineer that he created a Perfect Man who would outlive them all and that he deserved eternal life as a reward for creating new life.

For some unknown reason, this pisses off the Engineer who then kills David, Wayland and the Security Guy and then resumes his mission to Kill All Humans (TM Bender).

It doesn't really explain why the Engineers decided to kill humanity in the first place after creating us and since David killed all the Engineers, we really don't know what their motivation was until David tells us he discovered it in a future movie.

We do kinda now know David's motivation for killing all Humans, he was pretty bitter about the whole idea of being made better than man and then being expected to still serve man.

So he decided to create a perfect organism of his own to go out and kill the people who would have enslaved him.

I can only imagine that the Engineers created lots of life, only to have some of that life turn on them instead of serving them... that would kinda go along with the way the story has evolved.

RLM's take:

If the movie was like Robinson Crusoe on Mars but with David and Shaw exploring the Engineers then David going nuts and turning on her it would have been 100X better. Instead we got shit on every level.

Alien Covenant ticket sales plunged 80%: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottme...3m-friday/amp/

Unless the Chinese flock to it I don't think we'll be seeing a third movie anytime soon.

I just went and rewatched the prologue with the crew and the ship. I forgot about this:

Quote:
Captain Franco: I just wanted to say hey before I jet out, I'm feeling kind of queesy.
Not Dallas: What, you're not feeling good?
Captain Franco: I'm just burning up.
Outstanding.

Great article on Den of Geek talking about the shift away from Elizabeth Shaw.

Echos a lot of my own thoughts about the franchise.
