Stupidly Expensive Big Box PC Games - $800 for sealed Gabriel Knight?!?

A look at some of the more RARE and EXPENSIVE big box PC games.

I know a few of you on EvilAvatar collect Big Box PC stuff (C64, Amiga, Atari St, MS-DOS)... what are some of your more rare or valuable games?

I threw out the boxes for most of my big box games decades ago and then anything that was left that was worth money I sold before the PC game market crashed. (Steam FTW.)

I still have the giant boxes for Ultima 9 and Baldur's Gate II and the steel boxes for Wolfenstein and Quake III Arena.

And, of course, I have the original boxed edition of Battlecruiser 3000 AD.

Man, this video really makes me sad because it reminds me of all the cool stuff I have gotten rid of over the years. I have only recently started to save things like this but, man ...

I've had big box Ultima IX, FFVII, Oblivion, Pool of Radiance and a bunch of others and all I have to show for it now is this:

The SSI Gold Box games will always have a special place in my heart. Those covers are just some of the best of the best. They set the tone for the games perfectly.

Only fully intact PC game in box I ended up keeping is Ultima IX Dragon Edition. That puppy is massive.

Also I would pay a fortune for a collection of Amiga complete boxed games.

It is a B grade box for a B grade game ;-) I say that with love because TW2, for me, is just like an awesome B movie to me; I absolutely loved it for what it was. I actually snagged the collector's editions after my play-through because I liked it so much.

Oh, man, no doubt. Perhaps the SSI one I weep for the most is the Phantasie III: The Wrath of Nikademus not for any reason other than it is one of my best C-64 gaming memories of all time...

Early in my marriage my wife and I move around the country a lot. At one point I got tired of hauling around game boxes, and chucked them all 13 -14 years ago (the last major move). Had I known we would actually stay here for this long... Well I'm kicking myself.

We chucked them all when my son was born, because we were using his bedroom for a storage room so I kept the games and threw out all the boxes.

I'm not sorry we did it, if you look at how much space they take up even without the boxes, it's too much.

Sadly, it's pretty much time to chuck the games and manuals now too. There is like no after market for old PC games any more and I don't think I can go back to them anyway.
