Capitalism's creative destruction continues with the death of Toys R Us (and soon enough KMart and Sears, among others).

GE has been delisted from the DJIA. IBM was once top dog. AOL was king of the Internet. Nobody lasts forever.

Remember that, Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Apple. You'll all be around a good long while, but you may shrink into ignominious unimportance (Facebook will be there first among those listed, if it isn't headed that way already).

Edit: International stores are staying open, however...some as Toys R Us (Canada, some EU nations) others being rebranded through purchases (some EU nations).

For 15 years I visited or worked on the (various) Microsoft campuses in Redmond starting around 1995. I returned again recently after about 8 years away. The change and the stagnation I feel there is staggering from when from the first time I set foot on the campus.

I have the good fortune to work with a lot of tech companies so I get to compare that to a place like Amazon where the energy is still youthful as opposed to MS where the energy is old and tired dressed up in "hip" trappings. Like when someone's dad pops the collar on his Polo shirt. Cringeworthy.

The sad thing about Toys R Us is that it seems they could still be a thriving store. They just made some bad decisions. I'll forever miss it. Though most of my childhood toy buying happened at Bradlees, I still have fond memories of buying NES games with my own cash at Toys R Us. And in more recent years, my wife and I would take the kids to Toys R Us for a sort of toy tour a couple of months before Christmas so they would have an idea of what to ask for from Santa Claus.

Bradlee's? You from New England Chief? I thought they were NE only when they existed.

Indeed I am. Southern CT and when we moved to the house I grew up in 77, there was almost nothing nearby. When Bradlees opened up 5 minutes down the road, my parents were thrilled. I've either junked or given all of my childhood crap to my kids but the one thing I won't give them is my M.U.S.C.L.E. collection of in a plastic bin that still has a Bradlees price tag on it.

Remember when *people* did amazing things that pushed us forward?

This week in 1965 Joe Engle and the chaps in the Air Force Research Labs pushed the boundaries of science to launch the X-15 to a staggering altitude of 53 miles making Joe only the third person to secure Astronaut wings. It doesn't feel like there is anything inspiring like this anymore. When kids grow up do they still want to be astronauts or is now just another deprecated profession in the days of Space X and Bezos' AI controlled rockets and commercialized, automated space world? Like travelling salesmen have all but disappeared astronaut, already incredibly difficult to achieve, may as well not exist as a goal.

Most of the first generations of astronauts came out of the Air Force as former pilots. We don't use nearly as many human pilots as we used to, which alters the pipeline for astronauts.

Also, we're doing amazing things as a nation, are you kidding with this doom and gloom crap? In the past few decades we have:

* Sequenced the entire human genome.
* Made computing power greater than that used in the Apollo program available to nearly the entire globe through smart phones.
* Discovered a cure for hepatitis C, a hugely debilitating, incurable disease.
* Lowered the overall cancer death rate by a quarter.
* Created an entire private industry of space launches and soon manned space flight.
* Cut the global poverty rate IN HALF.
* Used GMOs to feed over seven billion human beings when famine was predicted a few decades ago.
* Appointed a conservative replacement for Scalia and soon for Kennedy!

And on and on and on. Life is good. WINNING!

I didn't find out about this until today, but apparently Johnny Fox died back in December (2017). Johnny (actually his stage name, his real name is John) was a magician and sword swallower. He was extremely entertaining and was the reason for going to the Maryland Renaissance Festival every year. I took this video back in 2010 (I should have asked the person sitting in front to move darnit...)

Poor guy. I feel like I must have seen him perform at some point. He lived right near me and I've seen most of the local fairs at some point. God rest his soul.
