'Venom' Movie May Have No Director, But It's Now Set For Release in 2018

Digital Trends: Sony's Movie May Have No Director, But It's Now Set For Release in 2018

Quote:
Sony Pictures has tried to get a movie about Spider-Manís popular nemesis Venom off the ground for almost 10 years now, but apparently the studio is feeling pretty confident these days about the project, as the film was just given an October 2018 release date.

Just after Warner Bros. Pictures announced that it was moving the premiere date for Aquaman from October 5 to December 21, Sony claimed the October date for Venom ó a project that most industry experts didnít even realize was still being developed. The announcement also revealed the movieís writing team.
...
Light on details, but I'm hopeful it's good -- I really was a Venom fan as a kid. The YouTube channel 'Emergency Awesome' has some interesting theories in regard to the Venom movie (spoiler alert: If you're interested in the Life movie, the YouTube video linked may spoil it for you).

I smell another license trying to follow Deadpool and Logan into the R-rated realm. Hopefully they have learned from their past mistakes and finally treat it with some goddamn respect.

This is going to be a complete train wreck. From what I've been hearing, it's going to be a completely standalone film...which means no connection to the MCU and - most importantly - no connection to Spider-Man.

Venom in intrinsically linked to Spider-Man, so separating him entirely just doesn't work.

Also, those rumors about Life are, in all likelihood, utter bullshit.

If a movie was written my a focus group committee, why not just another studio committee to direct, right?

How about they just follow the Rick Remender Venom storyline from 2011? That was a fun series, and the Iraq veteran angle for the host is still timely.
