Weekend Gamer: What are you playing?

20 years ago Everquest was all the rage. World of Warcraft wasn't even around. What were you playing 20 years ago? What are you playing this weekend?

This weekend anniversary weekend, so whatever makes the wife happy is what I'll be playing!

Quake 3 - 20 years ago I was in Austrailia working. I kicked the shit out of the ozzys so badly in q3 that they all thought I was botting. Finally went to a 600 person lan. I would compete in my 1v1 and then go take a nap, be woken up, slay the fuck out of whoever was next, rinse and repeat until 5am when I won the whole tourney with maybe a couple of deaths in the process. I miss those days of gaming....

I wanted to like this....looked forward to it for months. Played it, and I couldn't believe how bad the acting, animation, and character models were. I logged out after the first main mission where you go into the sewers of gunbarrel. Honestly not sure if I will ever play it again...

Sucks that my tastes have become more picky, but that game seems mediocre at best.

BTW....I picked up a copy of "A Plague Tale: Innocence". I'm only 15 minutes in, but damn it looks beautiful. Hoping for a "last of us" style game.

Everquest ruined MMOs for me by setting the bar so high. I didn't last a year in WoW and I haven't been able to stomach anything that came since (with a couple minor exceptions). With cautious optimism, I've backed EQ creator Brad McQuaid's Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen in hopes that it will recapture a fraction of what EQ offered.

For now, I'm content with pub matches in Overwatch and Rocket League and trying out the flavor of the month (Rage 2?).

EQ was great because it was so difficult. Losing everything and having to do a corpse run through the plane of fear was downright fucked up, but that harsh penalty for fucking up made everything feel so much more important.

The games that really showed me what gaming would become was Castle Wolfenstein and then Doom.

But the first game that I really just loved from beginning to end was System Shock, my all time favorite game. This love has been rekindled over the years by System Shock 2, Deus Ex, the Thief series, the Bioshock series, and most recently Prey.

Just wanted to note here that 2019 is the 20 year anniversary of System Shock 2. Maybe I'll bust that out this weekend.

Looking at the releases in early '97, I probably was playing X-wing vs. Tie Fighter. A lot.
This weekend, dunno. May start a new game of Stellaris, haven't played since the last big update.
Edit: why the hell was I looking at 97? Checking '99...Alien vs Predator, no doubt.

Yeah me too, but DAMN does it ever feel dated. It feels like a sequel alright, a sequel that could have come out a year after Rage 1.

I posted before I read this. Glad I'm not the only one. I felt like quitting before even being SENT to Gunbarrel. I felt like quitting as soon I got my first achievement. Did they just reskin Rage 1? It's not even the same engine so that doesn't make sense. WTF seriously.

Maybe it's one of those games with TERRIBLE intro that grows on you, like Days Gone.

It's almost like they are trying to be Farcry Blood Dragon but failing horribly.

Nearly 20 years ago for me. Summer of 98 I got on Sega Heat and played Unreal. Loved the community. Everyone was always there playing and talking shit about how much Heat sucked. haha

Then UT came out and it was glorious. Of course Heat died. Everyone jumped to P2P servers and gamespy.

Loved Deck16 and CTF-Face. Personal favorite was DM-Morbias.

Cliffy-B was some no name guy who made awesome maps. haha

20 Years ago I was playing... Everquest. And I'll be playing it a bit this weekend with a sprinkling of Starcraft and maybe Season 17 of Diablo 3.

I was an OG EQer. March 1999 baby!

Human Paladin for about 20 minutes, for the first day/night cycle when I couldn't see. Then a Half-Elf Paladin. Then a Human Bard (once I could twink myself with a lightstone) and so on.

I eventually settled on a High Elf Enchanter who I had started on September 1999 and over the next almost two years managed to level to 60 by averaging about 6 hours of play per day (120 full days logged on just that character)

I had been maintaining a guild page right when the Luclin expansion started but then I got an invite into the local uberguild and that faded away.

Freeservers still hosts that piece of shit! Young me didn't age well.

Finally wrapping up Days Gone. The enthusiasm I had at the start is gone, but it's still got some solid mechanics. Looking forward to Version 2.

Playing the shit out of City of Heroes again on the recently opened "rogue" server Homecoming. It's still a bunch of fun. I'll probably log many hours into MWO as well to pick up some free pixel-money from the event this weekend.

For those of you who really want to capture that old EQ feel, google Project 1999. It's a very well run private server that caps at Velious endgame.
