Codemasters Acquires Project Cars Studio for $30 Million

Pretty interesting development to me. I’ve been wanting to get into sim racing for a while now and I don’t really know where to start - ie, which game the pro players play? Where are the leagues and events?

Emabulator was always our go-to guy for which racer is best, I’ll have to check with him!

Codemasters games tend to be incapable of making up their mind if they want to be a sim or an arcade racer. Personally I find them to be the worst racing games, by a rather enormous margin. It's a shame they took over a solid franchise that had demonstrated some real potential.

Evil, what platform are you looking to get into and what type of vehicles are you interested in, ie Formula 1, GT/LeMans, street cars etc?

Not a full on Sim, but close enough... Forza, and not the horizon ones.

I agree 100%. They were good back with the TOCA games, but downhill form there.

I still fire up TOCA RD3 once in awhile, great game.

I, however, really like codemaster racing games. I guess I'm the target because I couldn't get into Project Cars at all and I'm kind of a car guy.

TOCA 3 is my favorite of that series. I couldn't get into Project Cars at all, and I really wanted to.

I have both platforms now, so I would play on whichever one has the bigger audience. I think I lean more toward the Formula 1 cars than most everything else.

Wheel or controller?

Project Cars 2 has really good driving mechanics but it would probably be pretty rough with a controller. The single player campaign can be played through a few different paths, they have open wheel starting from fairly low and going up to formula 1 tier. This game isn't forgiving but if you are looking for a sim on consoles for open wheel, it's probably your best bet.

Formula 1 2k whatever is a far more relaxed environment, I would not call it arcade, but sim would be a stretch.

Forza 7 probably has the best single player campaign, multi player is lacking and it's all over for vehicle types, fairly decent driving mechanics but not at GT levels and certainly not project cars 2. Best broad based choice.

GT Sport has the best multiplayer, but a lousy single player campaign and very small car selection. Better driving mechanics then F7, but not quite as hard core as project cars 2.

Assetto Corsa is also decent if you get it cheap.

I'm going to put money into a wheel and pedals soon, I found a stand that folds up that would work good for me, though it's on the pricey side.

What I'm looking for is which game has the biggest eSports community and events. I'm not saying I'm ever going to be good enough to win, but I wouldn't mind trying out now and then. Seems like it would be fun.

That sounds like an excellent summary, and especially the question regarding wheel/pad is important. I'm more of a solo player myself, so I love the Forza games (both Motorsport and Horizon) - they just look and feel so damn great. "Forza Motorsport 5" was the game that brought me back to using the cockpit view again!

"Gran Turismo" will always hold a special place in my heart, though. I despised the paper-thin career mode in "Gran Turismo Sport", but even so, I find the driving model a bit more forgiving than FM's (just my opinion, maybe it's all the years I've spent on GT). Anyway, it's eminently driveable with a controller. The online seems fine (it better be, with all the resources it took from the singleplayer game!), and many cars come in different, pre-set power levels (like road, Gr. 4, Gr. 3, GR. X - whatever that means:-), allowing players to stick to their favorite car handling over different race classes.

I tried "Project CARS" as well as "Project CARS 2", but you really need a wheel for these games. For some reason, Slightly Mad has never been able to produce a controller setting that feels intuitive. Also, I assume this was patched, but the AI at launch (both times) was simply horrible. Oh, and I could never get into "Assetto Corsa", because it's just too damn ugly.

By the way: If you fancy a VR headset (I know, that's not exactly reconcilable with your wish for eSports), you should definitely check out "DiRT Rally" with its VR expansion. I haven't played it much, but sitting in this virtual coffin really taught me to respect the tracks!

I really enjoy Project car2 and Dirt 4 with my wheel set, PC2 is very sim! Forza horizon series is also a favorite! I have yet to get into F1 2018/2019 but some people really like it. Had a torn meniscus the last year and couldnt sim race. I find the AI in PC2 just fine, some of the races depending difficulty and weather are super hard.

I have a slightly older Fanatec csr-e set (ps3/360/pc compatible) and there is an adapter called the drivehub which made it compatible with ps4/xbone and can replicate a logitech g29 for games without fanatec wheel support. Drivehub has a few extra features - it lets you mix and match Shifters/wheels/pedals if you wanted. Then you can use the same set on ps4/xbone/pc rather than being limited to one console!! super useful. Im ps4/pc right now but eventually i would like an xbone x to take advantage of 4k/120hz racing games which my pc cannot do.
If you have a big budget or can find one used i highly recommend the fanatec wheels!
I use a Wheelstand pro , the only thing i need to complete my kit is a better bucket seat .

I really enjoy Codemasters; F1 and Dirt Rally. They are an excellent company and the "feel" especially with a wheel is excellent. This acquisition is good for racing enthusiasts. See you on the track. GT is excellent as well but Codemasters has never let me down.. especially F1.

eSports and racing right now on the consoles are in a bad place to be honest. GT Academy is shuttered at the moment, PC2 still needs more polish and has some oddities and bugs we'll probably never see fixed because their focus is on PC3, Forzas multiplayer just isn't that robust.

None of that is to say you can't get some great multiplayer action, but right now nothing compares to what Polyphony had going for years with GT Academy(interestingly it was shuttered because of Nissan's change in motorsports).

If you are looking for a good multiplayer experience these games still deliver to varying degrees, but I wouldn't look to any of them for eSports right now, the focus is clearly shifted to the next generation. That said, if you consider PC, this changes profoundly.

Back in '05 I had a brand new Mustang and was playing Forza 2 a lot as GT5 had not hit yet. In force the Mustang would go into severe snap oversteer frequently and easily, it drive a lot like the old '5.0' GTs of the late 80s and early 90s. My car want like that, at all. Without serious effort it wouldn't do that, you could get it room oversteer easily of course, but not the spin inducing kind without legit effort or something really dumb.

When GT 5 hit the car handled like mine did.

That's a singular example I use because out of the many cars I've driven that Forza gets embarrassingly wrong, that was the one I drove the most. This is very common with Forza, the feeling, always, that I'm playing a game based on how someone thinks a car behaves that they clearly have never driven. It may 'feel' more hardcore, but that's not how you do a simulation properly.

The opposite side, mid engined cars for many years in Forza would badly push understeer if you dropped throttle mid corner, GT would go to spinning oversteer which is accurate.

Why I consider PC2 a better sim is because you have to handle all of the minutia of actually doing a race, qualifying, setup etc. I can't comment on the accuracy of the cars as much because they are not street cars.

If I want to see how a car drives in a game, I'd check GT first, Assetto Corsa second and wouldn't really use Forza at all. To be fair, there are some cars Forza nails, but IME that's one out of every ten with two out of ten being laughably wrong. GT seems to nail seven out of ten with none that I've personally driven being terrible.
