Marvel's 'New Warriors' Sets Its Cast — Including Squirrel Girl

The Hollywood Reporter has the story.

Quote:
Three months after being picked up straight to series by Freeform, Marvel's New Warriors has found its cast.

Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us) has landed the breakout role of Squirrel Girl while Baby Daddy grad Derek Theler will stay in business with Freeform after landing the role of Mister Immortal in Marvel's first live-action scripted comedy.

The duo lead the ensemble cast in the 10-episode series about six young people learning to cope with their abilities in a world where bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates. Joining Vayntrub and Theler are Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii.

"I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It'll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them," said showrunner — and longtime Squirrel Girl superfan — Kevin Biegel (Enlisted).

I fucking hate squirrel girl as a character. Stupidest character ever but they had to go all goofy and somehow make it so she goes all "Girl Power" to defeat Doom, a slew of other top tier villains, and even solos Galactis.

She's a joke character who stupid writers have basically made into one of the most powerful modern heroes of the marvel universe.

Milana Vayntrub has too much of the plain but pretty (hence why she is used so extensively in AT&T ads - and is a nice refrain from the ugly assed man child that is used for the Verizon adds and the sloppy seconds Sprint guy) look, so I wonder how the fans are going to react to this. The modern interpretation of Squirrel Girl is somewhat chubby, split toothed and not someone you would do a double-take to.

Don't know the characters. Is she really channeling girl power?

Wasn't Squirrel Girl a babysitter for the Avengers or something? I don't read these books, so I've only ever thought of her as an Anti-Deadpool. Oh, and "Squirrel Girl" has to be the single hardest-to-pronounce superhero name for a non-native speaker, ever! Apart from the literal German translation "Eichhörnchenmädchen", of course.

If you have Marvel Unlimited, read a book from
the late 90s called GLA. It's fantastic. That's where these characters popularity really springs from. It's a limited series about the Great Lakes Avengers who are a team of losers with lame powers who try to protect the mid-west. It's a lame premise, but the key is that the humor is SUPER dark. It's like an Indie movie.

That's really where Squirrels Girl's popularity came from. But it was mostly ironic-popularity because it's an intentionally stupid character. But now, because 2015-2017 Marvel is trying to make everything stupid front and center, they adopted her as one of their premiere female heroes. They gave her her own book a few years ago which was actually really good for a while. But it's only good if not taken seriously. The more they try to put her in the main Marvel universe and treat her seriously, the more painful she is.

In short, she's like Howard The Duck. She's meant to inhabit a side corner of the Marvel universe that isn't taken seriously.

Is this a television series? If so, it has serious potential to exhibit some quality Lost-style storyttelling, with origins and background information told in form of flashbacks. If they try to do continuous origin stories or shoehorn these characters into a film, however, I predict Marvel's first major flop.

There really wasn't any "Girl Power" the first time she beat Doom; it happened back in '91 and she essentially Zerg rushed him with squirrels.

Still, she was very much a joke character at the time; she's certainly been transformed into something that was never really intended since her inception.

A proper Zerg rush is hard to beat, I'll give ya that.

I guess I'm just hoping it's not going to be an SJW-fest.

Straight comedy almost never works with super heroes. Look at The Tick TV series. While the lead actor was great, overall it just wasn't a very good show and it died in only half a season.

The two things just don't mix well. Humor in a super hero movie is fine, straight comedy doesn't really work out.

Straight humor works fine for animated series because it is much easier to suspend disbelief that these characters could exits, but it is a much harder sell for live action. You definitely need to be more even heeled when it comes to live action.

I guess I was one of the few who liked Mystery Men. This sounds like a family friendly version of that, of which I have no interest.

Short form it works fine. But do you think they can carry it through a television series?

One of the benefits of comics, for example, is that they are shorter (dailies) or are longer arcs that take drop once a month. A TV series has to stay fresh and entertaining every week for months on end. Humor is much harder to maintain with that kind of frequency if you are not careful.

I loved Mystery Men but it was classic Ben Stiller comedy and the characters were made in that mold of terrible heroes with essentially delusionals of "super" powers.

The Great Lakes Avengers were just lame heroes, but Superheroes none-the-less.

And Squirrel Girl was the worst of them. And she has a cult following as rabid as the stupid rodents she summons when she goes up against everything from poor little sick girls to the forces that control the foundations of the universe (and she just about always wins). And yes, I'm betting a ton of her fans have died hair and are gender or emotionally confused.

IMO it cheapens every other hero and story when the writers take a joke character and do what entire teams of Omega level mutants who could destroy worlds and entire societies of super beings aren't able to do.

Her and Nutso can go to it, everyone else should just retire.

But video-games have a higher social acceptance than comics. So his horse is higher than our horses.

Unironically this. Cartoon and Sonic porn is = to lifting weights because all social norms are a matter of perspective because SJW.

Hey. fuck you this is important to the integrity of the world. First they come to make fun of the superheroes next thing you know they expect ALL superheroes to be funny.

This started with the MCU when they had to put funny bits in to make people laugh. Then more and more quips and more laughs. This is the ultimate evolution epitomized in Rocket and Groot "No not that one! Does anyone up there have any tape?"

At least the Marvel TV shows were gritty, but no, can't even leave that alone. They gotta go all light family fare like DC and especially Super Girl (though I admit to watching it just because I have a crush on the lead character).

This is srs bidnez.

I bet if I told you it was a Zionist plot to turn all the viewers of this show into raging (((JEWS))) you'd care.
