PS4 Cross-Play Restrictions Are All About Money, Says Ex-Sony Dev

GameSpot has the story.

The lack of PS4 cross-play in Fortnite and other games can be chalked up to money, according to former Sony developer John Smedley. The ex-boss of Daybreak Game Company, formerly known as Sony Online Entertainment, said that he saw the rationale first-hand when he was at the company.

"[W]hen I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money," he said in a tweet (via Eurogamer). "They didn't like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a Playstation. simple as that. dumb reason, but there it is." This was presented in the context of telling fans to keep up the pressure.

In other words, Sony doesn't want players to purchase content for Fortnite on one platform and still experience it on their own. This situation has come up before in other popular online games like Rocket League, and comments from Phil Spencer made it clear it wasn't Xbox blocking the pipes. At the time, Psyonix said it could activate the feature anytime it had Sony's approval. After cross-play was temporarily and accidentally enabled for Fortnite, Spencer more pointedly said he would have liked to see them leave it on.

This is so fucking stupid. For many people the Switch is a portable device... of which Sony is no real competitor too. If this was on Vita and Sony gave a shit about Vita, maybe you could make the argument...

This is how I think things need to go down:

1. Sony needs to announce that they’re going to look into adjusting their policies to allow for at least limited cross-platform options
2. They need to work with the major companies to define how they can all get along and be on the same page in regard to doing what’s right for the players
3. They need to be honest and transparent about their concerns, without using them as an excuse not to come to an agreement
4. They need to follow through and do their part to collaborate and build a cross platform community
5. If they do these things, we need to praise them for being the company that did this while they were in the lead and had something to lose

Here is part of the problem. And, for those who are curious, is part of the reason so many companies have their own launchers like Epic, Zenimax, Daybreak, Ubisoft with UPlay, and EA with Origin (even though you can get SOME of the games on Steam there is a "disentangled" version of the launcher).

Sony and Microsoft and Nintendo and Steam get a 30% cut of every transaction performed on their platform. If it is a player made piece of content it is even more (up to 85% I hear for cosmetics in Team Fortress and CS:GO).

Let's Ubisoft has a multiplatform game which uses "Ubi-Bucks" you can buy from their website to get cosmetics in the game and $100 gets you 100 Ubi-Bucks.

If you buy Ubi-Bucks from the Steam, Xbox, PS/4, or Nintendo store they get 30% of the transaction cost. A $100 transaction for Ubi-bucks actually only grosses Ubisoft $70 even though the player still got 100 Ubi-Bucks.

But if you buy Ubi-Bucks from the standalone Ubisoft launcher, Uplay Ubisoft gets 100% of the money. So if everything transfers across platforms and I'm Ubisoft I'm selling the Ubi-Bucks "on sale" on my launcher for $80 per 100 Ubi-Bucks, making $10 more per transaction and driving business to ME instead of to Steam, Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft.

EA didn't leave Steam because "they could do more for the customer on their own platform" they left Steam because they didn't want to give Steam 30% of every Microtransaction they were planning to put into their games for the next 20 years and Steam wouldn't cut them a break... Steam doesn't cut ANYONE a break.

This is why MS doesn't care if items or currency are cross-platform, the majority of the players are on the PS/4. Anything that hurts Sony is good for Microsoft even if it is shortsighted as hell since the policy will bite them in the ass if they ever get the large marketshare again.

Back when I played EverQuest there was a real uproar over some Monk class issues. Monks from everywhere staged a sit in on the same server in the same zone, it was a pretty big deal. Smedley showed up as the official rep (in the form of a giant gnome) to talk to the gathered monks and do some PR. It was pretty cool.
