They could have done this similar to the book. Look at movies (for lack of better examples off the top of my head) like Love Actually, or the Valentine's Day movie, which had several criss-crossing stories. Create a semblance of a plot behind the journalist collecting stories from the survivors as he travels around the world interviewing them. If that doesn't work for you, choose a select few stories, and have them cross over and interlock with each other.

A movie doesn't need a single main-character driving the entire plot. It is possible to do an ensemble cast, which would have made this a better movie, I think. The reason WWZ was so amazing was that it wasn't a mindless movie about a hero fighting zombies, it was about the people and society that survived. There are thousands of hero-centric zombie stories out there, and nothing at all like WWZ.

So I agree inasmuch as the real obstacles outlined in World War Z are caused by other humans. But it isn't really about small problems among small bands of humans in vast stretches of nothing. That said, sure, some of World War Z's stories would fit right in with a Walking Dead universe (the crashed pilot). But most of them require masses of uninfected and people who haven't yet made peace with exactly what's going down.
Funny you mention the I-10 story. I drive that stretch of road across the Atchafalaya couple times a week. A great setting for a zombie story on tge bayou.

This trailer looks very similar to what I have seen earlier in the morning when I looked down at the toilet bowl after my morning shit.

Contagion handled the large cast/global scope issues well enough.

My feeling is that Holywood has formulas for what sells and what doesn't.

This is a Brad Pitt movie - it's expected to be a BLOCKBUSTER. So we need breathless set pieces constantly and new visual ideas to get people excited. Only the horror "purists" want the same shambling zombies than were done to death in the 70's and 80's.

So yeah; World War Z couldn't be made as a big budget film and remained true to the source. Them's the breaks.

How HARD CAN IT BE!!!! Just do the book as a narrative of various short stories that show how massive the zombie problem is and how the people/government dealt with it. DOES IT HAVE TO HAVE AN ENDING? Just leave it open ended (LIKE IN THE BOOK) and your done. THEN YOU CAN GO BACK AND WORK ON PART 2 AFTER YOU MADE A HELL OF LOT OF MONEY BECAUSE YOU HAD THE SCRIPT FROM A GREAT BOOK. DAM THESE HOLLYWOOD TYPES ARE STUPID. Look at lord of the rings.... it was very close to the book and its a great movie.

The zombies look so wrong. They remind me of ants working together to surmount obstacles.

That part I agree with. The CGI zombie ant people doesn't really work on screen.

It's a great idea though. Whoever wrote the script obviously read Simon Clark's Blood Crazy because those scenes are totally stolen from that book.

Uhm.

So, this is for you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCrqy5S-H_A

This isn't even related to my opinon of the movie just ... wow dude.

Next you're going to say Starship Troopers was totally faithful to the book.

Apollyonbob... not sure what you mean....Did you read book? It had an open ending. I was satisfied at the end but I knew there could be more. The hero doesn't always have to win at the end. The book was a glimpse into that world.

The movie Lord of the Rings was faithful to the books. I read them. It wasn't exact but it was the story in the book and the movie tried to recreate the book onscreen.

Starship troopers was not totally faithful to the books. I read that one too.

you know when you watch a "great" cgi movie in the theaters and are all blown away by the effects, but when you get it at home on blue ray you're like "ohh, hey, look at all that green screen and modeling".

this trailer looks like you're going to be sitting in the theater saying the latter and realizing you just gave brad pitt $3 to do it.

It doesn't look bad, as such. It just looks like a rather generic zombie flick, which is nothing whatsoever like World War Z, which was basically an extended thought experiment about how a zombie apocalypse might really affect the various cultures of the world beyond the obvious "omigod-zombies-killem!" response.

Thumbs down

This looks almost exactly like any one of the last five big budget Hollywood disaster movies replete with family drama and all.
Just change the settings/disasters and there you go.

example:
"you're asking me to leave my family
tell the kids i'm coming back. daddyyy!! honeeeyyy!
just know i'm coming back"

I'm sick to shit of family drama being forced down my throat.

That's his cut! not the ticket price. Clearly the studios, unions, insurance companies and investors get some too.
