Gay people don't walk around with town criers announcing 'hear ye hear ye here be gay guy!!!' . So why do we need the big announcement for the movies / tv shows. If you have gay characters just put them in unannounced just like they are in the real world.
This is the thing that annoys me too.

I don't have anything else to add, so here you go:

Romance and romantic relationships were actually featured numerous times in the series throughout the years. This particular instance does't even necessarily even extend that far; it appears to be a single line alluding to the fact that one of the characters isn't heterosexual. It would be "pivotal" because the theme of the film seems to be "accepting who you are".

As far as cultural marxism is concerned...I'm not necessarily ready to buy wholesale into that particular grand conspiracy.

I mean, one of the main characters is autistic; what sort of agenda are they trying to push with this?

It's the left virtue signalling, which is their inexpensive, no-personal-cost way of telling the nose-bleed in-crowd at the top of Mount Progressive Fundamentalist that you're 'with them' and enlightened. You know, like assholes who scream about apocalyptic global warming (signalling their virtue!) at events they flew thousands of miles to get to rather than hold a virtual conference (you can't swim in the Mediterranean at a virtual conference after all ), or idiots driving a TESLA for its carbon 'neutrality' when in fact the damn things are just as damaging to the environment (in other ways, such as production, energy production/use for battery recharging, disposal of toxic chemicals from batteries, etc., etc.), or asswipes who own a dozen homes and declare humanity must live more sustainably, or on and on and on.

VIRTUE SIGNALLING. If you're not doing it, you're in danger of being culled from the mindless herd.

Hey, I guess I was right (at least according to this one particular review); the lines referencing the gay character are essentially throwaway.

Trini is basically asked point blank if she’s gay, and her answer is she doesn’t like labels. Which, in real life, fine. But in the movie studio world, this is the “have cake and eat it, too” way out. The movie will get accolades for having a gay character, but if some small movie theater in Alabama wants to ban the Power Rangers movie – and I’m sure that’s coming – then the studio can say, “Well, she never said one way or another.” It’s 2017 and huge studio movies still seem to want to dance around this subject and it’s frustrating.
I'd figure the conservative parents 'round these parts would be more concerned about the multiple masturbation jokes and the revenge porn subplot...but, no, let's freak out because there's a gay character! Our children might catch the gay!

Is it? Is it really? Is it virtue signalling to think it's okay one of the main characters is autistic, or does it only count if I defend the existence of a gay character?

I mean, I don't have kids and even I think it's in pretty poor taste to have a revenge porn subplot and masturbation jokes (including one about jerking off a bull) in something like Power Rangers.

Movie is trash, time to move on. Not for kids, just rewatch the 90s Power Ranger movie.

Well if the initial Hollywood Reporter headlines read "New Power Rangers Film Features Multiple Masturbation Jokes" people would react pretty negatively. But they don't use masturbation to virtue signal... at least not yet.

So, you're more worried about virtue signalling and inclusion that, say, sexually explicit jokes and plotlines?

Gotcha.

You misunderstand. People weren't initially worried about the multiple masturbation jokes and revenge porn story because it wasn't known at the time. The only headline I saw was the one proclaiming that there was a queer super hero. I.E. They were virtue signaling by making the proclamation. If they thought they could somehow earn points by talking about the masturbation jokes to the Hollywood Reporter then that would have been the headline instead. And you're damn right people would be upset when they read it. I know my wife and I sure were when we read that review.
