PUBG Xbox One performance still isn't good enough

The Digital Foundry at Eurogamer has declared Playerunknown's Battlegrounds unfit for duty on Xbox One.

Quote:
In its recent Spring Xbox PUBG Roadmap, Bluehole provides a candid and eye-opening admission about the state of the game. "To put it bluntly, we are simply not satisfied with the game's current console performance," the statement says. "Especially so during tense moments of onscreen action."

A couple of months have passed since our last PUBG Xbox analysis and new patches continue to roll out, so in reassessing the game, we did our most comprehensive tests yet - we captured and analysed over 90 minutes of action from both Xbox One and Xbox One X, buddying up in the same online game instances to ensure that conditions between the two consoles were as like-for-like as possible. Rather than extracting a selection of clips from the captures as we've done in the past, everything we played was analysed - the idea being to ensure that we missed nothing, while also giving us an idea of how the flow of an entire session played out.

What's clear is that there have been some improvements. Our first impressions of Xbox PUBG back in the day were marred by terrible performance in the game's lobby areas and when jumping to the carrier ready for deployment. Both aspects here see a boost, with a closer lock to the target 30 frames per second marred only by PUBG's signature massive stutter when players transition to the carrier. The developers have also added additional lobbies too, though in common with the crashed plane area, texture streaming here is still rather slow. Rubber-banding or 'micro-teleporting' is also a non-issue now - during our testing period, anyway. Previously, simple tasks like walking through a door could prove challenging, but things are clearly much improved now.

That's because cryengine is garbage and the pc sku is also a highly unoptimized train wreck as well from what I've seen of it.

I agree the game needs a lot more optimization on the PC as well.

PUBG actually uses Unreal Engine 4, even though it does feel like a CryEngine when you play it. I think the performance issues have more to do with map size and the number of players. Microsoft had engineers working with PUBG Corp. for the XboxOne release, so there has been some experienced people outside of the game's development theam working on the issue .

PUBG is a good example of the double edge sword of ambitious design. A lot of people love the game because it was pushing the boundaries of scale, but optimizing the game to run on moderate hardware has proven to be a beast.

PUBG is Unreal 4.

It is just really, really hard to optimize for the Xbox on a game that has to support the expected rendering quality for today's players. The Xbox One is a piece of shit, plain and simple and devs who aren't the top 10% of developers working on the UE4 engine are going to struggle unless they design around those limitations from the ground up.

Enter Fortnite which not only has some of the most amazing UE4 devs in the world working on it but doesn't try to push the fidelity PUBG and others try to push.

Ironically on the PC most players turn off as much as they can to squeeze out the perf, but the flexibility isn't offered on the console, which also has the sort of cool benefit of making sure people really do have a much more balanced game. Equally shitty all around.

Fortunately I guess PUBG sounds like it is shedding players at a fair clip so it may be a null issue in the next 12 months. This Battle Royale crowd is a fickle bunch.

Despite what most will say, anyone willing to play a 100 player permadeath round based game, has to a extent a idea of difficulty seeking.

when bugs, hacks and other desync issues hit, of course the fans are fickle, you can't ask for a hard core game, throw in elements like that, and leave it to the wind for as long as they did and not expect kick back
