First Trailer for Ryan Reynolds Video Game Movie Free Guy

Quote:
In Twentieth Century Fox’s epic adventure-comedy “Free Guy,” a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.

That just looks unbelievably terrible. It's like a movie full of video game cliche's by someone who has never played a video game.

I just ran into that in a novel, Matt Ruff's new novel 88 Names is like someone crossed The Interview with EverQuest and the problem is that the author doesn't seem to have played any MMO's after EverQuest. It doesn't really even seem like he played WoW, other than being aware of the word "Raid" and he seemed to have no clue at all what a MUD was, even though it's an important bit in the book.

If you are going to do this stuff... please at least do a minimum amount of research.

I'm probably being too harsh, my first impressions were just not good. It's growing on me a bit after watching it a second time.

I think it looks fun. Has a Walter Mitty meets Ready Player One mashup vibe going.

This isn't something I'll see in theaters, but I'll gladly get it on Blu-Ray for a mindless popcorn flick at home.

I really, really want to like it because I love Ryan Reynolds but this hits just a little too close to Deadpool territory for me and I need to know a little more about what happens when an NPC becomes self-aware.

I might catch it on Redbox but not likely in the Theater unless they can sell the premise and problem better in later trailers.

Well... It's "Wreck-It Ralph goes GTA Online", isn't it? Or "Reboot - The Live Action Movie".

Could be fun, but the trailer doesn't seem to tell any kind of story. I mean, an NPC bugs out, becomes self-aware and probably gains Elite status in the process - great, but what's the story? How does this change the real world? Does it even change the game world in any significant way? What is the Matrix? And what's Green Lantern doing here?

This could make a good 30-minute episode from a TV anthology. I could probably enjoy it on that level. But a movie? Nope. Looks lame.

That being said, I won't begrudge Reynolds a chance to cash in on his popularity with a fat check for a bad movie. They all do it, and he's earned the right to make money on a couple of awful studio decisions.

I'll pass, but I'll also give him a pass.

That is an insult to creativity. And by coincidence I have in Deadpool 2 now it sort of stinks also in my opinion.

I liked Deadpool 2. Perhaps not quite as great as the first one, but still pretty entertaining.

Reynolds is good in almost anything, so even if this is terrible he will probably still be fun to watch in it.
