My short list.

Deus Ex
X-Com
Quake 2
System Shock
Battlefield series
Age of Empires

These games impressed me and left a lasting impression. Especially Deus Ex and X Com. I am surprised I didn't see X-Com on any of the lists here.

Don't have time for this, don't have time for this, don't have... aww, dammit. My list is sort of a mix of Rommel's and Elektro's. Does that make me Elektrommel?

In no particular order, chosen within a strict time limit, and restricted to one entry from any series:

1. Final Fantasy VII (PSX)
2. Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES, the Japanese version, not the crappy PAL port)
3. Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution (PS2)
4. Turrican II: The Final Fight (Amiga)
5. Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
6. Assassin's Creed II (Xbox 360)
7. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
8. LocoRoco 2 (PSP)
9. Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods (Amiga)
10. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2)

Runner-ups (because there are just too damn many):
Lionheart (Amiga), Dragon's Crown (PS Vita/PS3), Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge (Amiga), Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP), Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (PSP, it's eligible because it's a spin-off:-), Alien vs. Predator (Arcade), X-Men vs. Street Fighter (Arcade/Saturn), Age of Empires II: Age of Kings (PC), Tekken 3 (PSX), Rage Racer (PSX), Worms: Reinforcements (PC), Xenon II: Megablast (Amiga), Die Siedler (Amiga), Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES), Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (PS3), Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales (DS), SoulCalibur (DC), Shenmue (DC), Phantasy Star Online (DC)

Oh, and I completely disagree with the notion that consoles were great in the past and suck today. Until the mid-90s, they were always overshadowed by the arcade (unless you owned a Neo-Geo), whereas computers (especially C64 and Amiga) provided an excellent gaming experience. Nowadays, there's only "PC Master Race" here, "4K" there, and worst of all, DRM, Early Access, Digital-only-no-printed-manual-for-you-ha-ha everywhere. I'll take a PS4 over that any day. Xbox One... not so much, because I personally can't stand Windows 8.

In no particular order, below are some games that stick out in my mind but may not be the best ever. I'm not sure what criteria I'd use to cut this list down to 10.
  • Dark Forces and Jedi Knight
  • Ico and Shadow of the Colossus
  • Out of This World
  • Lemmings
  • Xcom
  • Star Wars (arcade version with the great controller)
  • Deus Ex
  • System Shock
  • Ultima 4
  • Dungeon Master
  • The Bard's Tale
  • Mario 64
  • Star Trek: 25th Anniversary
  • Adventure
  • Archon 1 and 2
  • MULE
  • Dune 2
  • Wing Commander series and Privateer
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • The Longest Journey
  • Star Control 2
  • Journey
  • Portal
  • Eternal Darkness
  • Mass Effect

I can't rank my top 10 because I enjoy games in so different genres (like everyone else) but after reading through YOUR lists I find myself just nodding my head in agreement with so many of the titles listed. But I also like games based on the experiences tied to those games, whether they were group games or solo adventures.

Games that would be on my list somewhere include:

- Infocom, especially Zork, Planetfall and A Mind Forever Voyaging
- Dungeons of Daggorath for the CoCo
- Final Fantasy (NES), FF III (SNES) & FF VII (PS)
- Dragon Quest (NES)
- Mario Kart (any)
- Flashback, Out of this World & Prince of Persia
- Tecmo Bowl (NES)
- Madden 94 & NHL 95 (Genesis)
- Rainbow Six 3 & Vegas
- Batman (NES)
- Command & Conquer (PC)
- Unreal Tournament II (PC)
- Marathon I & II (Mac baby!!)
- Halo (most, not all)
- CoD Modern Warfare 2
- Oblivion & Skyrim
- Zelda (NES & SNES)
- Super Mario World
- H.E.R.O. (Colecovision - to me this was the best version)
- Miner 2049'er (Atari 400)
- Mario Party
- Guitar Hero/Rock Band (any)
- Danky Kang
- Blades of Steel (NES)
- Wii Sports
- StarCraft

... ugh there's many!

QFT. Not necessarily Top-10 material for me, but fantastic games, even Wii Sports (Bowling)!

I love reading all these lists. So many great games, so many fun memories. But beyond that, I think you get a really deep view of a person's inner machinations by seeing the games for which they have the fondest memories. There's probably a fantastic sociological study to be had here were someone to properly frame the conversation.

But not me. I'm just here to enjoy awesome gaming memories.

Warning: You'll probably go blind watching the pre-rendered videos (in my review, I called them "blurry" even back in 1998). However, the game itself looked (probably still looks) great, the monster design is fantastic, and the combat system is one of the best ever created. Plus, it won't take up too much of your time - which I nowadays consider a plus. I beat the 4 CDs in under 20 hours, and I'm one of those people that can't finish any "Final Fantasy" game in less than 60.

Rails on shooter. Yes. It also had a more like-a-ble protagonist.

I've begged you to review --2 GAMES-- in the entire time you've done your series. Space griffon VF-9 and Panzer Dragoon Saga. Two games Metal! I'd send you mine except I'm not a nice person.

Die in a fire.

And to everyone with the list that extends past 10 and those who have their games "In no particular order," get off the fence. Make a stand. The whole point of this exercise is to reflect on the best games you've ever played and pit them against one another. Did you notice I couldn't include Crimson Skies, Mechwarrior 2 or Homeworld on my list? Guess why--because that's the mother fucking fuck you in the ass and wear a cowboy hat rules!

If Rommel's opinion actually matters to you, MJ, I do have a copy of Space Griffon VF-9 you could borrow.

Keep on rockin'...
