METAL JESUS ROCKS!: Control Freak

The Metal Jesus is back this week to take a look at some great examples of form over function from the world of videogame controllers. Who says ergonomics reign supreme? Sometimes it's just as important to look good as it is to be good. And even if you can't look good, at the very least strive to be memorable.

Get a grip in the latest MJR! by clicking on the video below. (Just remember to use some hand sanitizer afterwards.)

What are other examples of weird, unique, or rare controllers you've encountered? Anybody else remember the SpaceOrb 360 on PC from back in the day?

I laugh at your puny 3rd party wireless Atari 2600 sticks. I still have my 1st party ones (and oddly the box...which is beat to hell); one of the few Atari things that I didn't lose somewhere along the line. The problem with these is the joystick base is very tall compared to the normal ones. Adult me holds them fine. '80s child me had a hell of a time with them. Oddly enough the range and reception were quite good.

I present the ColecoVision Super Action Controllers!

In ColecoVision baseball, the four triggers represented throwing to the 3 bases + home. I could easily throw the ball to any base, but throwing home using a pinky finger was always the hardest throw to make. That led to rage-throwing the controller - a lot - and it was not as sturdy as the 2600 controller, so they broke quickly. Damn pinky! (Some day, I will rule the world!)

Also, a much better controller to use for playing H.E.R.O and DK.

Thank you, I've spent years trying to remember that abomination.

Also, one of the most successful systems of all time was based on weird controllers. Or, in this case, controller accessories. Or, in this case ... HUNKS OF PLASTIC THAT DIDN'T DO ANYTHING.

Your video game den isn't large enough to fit them all.

A lot of design went into those. They actually look fairly modern if you change the colors.

Had one for my Amiga. It was so weird to use!!! Look at that button placement!

Also looks like it would make a great sex toy.

I had one of these for the original Xbox long before Nvidia thought it was cool (Yes, this is the playstation version but it's the same concept just with Xbox layout).

And I also had several spaceorbs. I bought one and got one as a freebie with Forsaken.

Let's not forget about this monstrosity:

Or this which was supposed to be the ultimate RTS controller:

This one got opened and proceeded to gather dust. Microsoft sure was on a kick for weird controllers then.

Have you ever used a Novint Falcon? It's so very cool as it uses force feedback in a way that I have never experienced before. When you throw a jar of jarate in TF2, you FEEL like you are hefting and throwing it. It's a very, very cool experience.

Sadly it really hasn't taken off even with Valve support.

Technically, that's a mouse replacement and not a controller. Mouse replacements always fail. The Falcon is more of an interesting desk toy you load up for the occasional round of Portal, not something you want to game on seriously.

It was horrible. We reviewed one for our PC magazine back then, and I made one of my stronger colleagues break it after the tests were finished - just to see how hard it would be. While the NeGcon provided an excellent racing experience, this hunk of plastic was ridiculously bad in every regard.
