New Computer!

My Son is building a new computer in about two weeks. We have a budget of about $900.

Suggestions? He will need to buy most everything except the hard drive and Blu-ray drive.

I'd probably base it on whatever builds Maximum PC has in back of the mag this month, with tweaks for whatever happens to be on sale on newegg and such.

Or just see what Amazon's got in their warehouse deal/returns department, and just buy one that's new, although open box but certified to work with $100ish deducted from the price.

Can you tell me the different types of workloads he will run besides gaming? How often will he run these other workloads?

Photoshop? Beat mixing? Anything other than gaming?

You know, kids really like laptops, btw.

I disagree. A purpose-built computer is ALWAYS the best computer. Just like a purpose-built race car is always the best race car.

Imagine Evil comes back and says the kid will use Photoshop an estimated 60% of the time. That's a significant amount. If that were the case, I'd probably worry about memory performance and making sure there is a scratch disk (m.2) with a nice storage drive (3 total drives, including OS) as well. A base system like that, which you can add-on a significant card later to if needed might just be the prescription for that solution request.

Or what if he comes back and says the kid is really into music? Wouldn't your hardware suggestions change after hearing that? Wouldn't a set of decent speakers be warranted?

Let's wait and see what he says.

Photoshop? No, he just wants to run ArmA3 and Minecraft with a buttload of mods.

He has a new case and he will roll over his current monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Minecraft mods can easily chew through 16gb of ram. Make sure it has at least that.

And use a BUNCH of CPU, so don't skimp by buying an i3 or ryzen3. Buy at least a good i5.

You absolutely can't go wrong with that one, man. You're going to love it and it will run your games very well.

Enjoy!

pssst, buy at least an SSD, but shoot for an M.2 drive.

Agreed! Good build. 1060 6GB is a fast card. Enjoy man!

If you--
1. Can find a gtx 1070 for the actual retail price, which is difficult due to the mining craze right now
2. Have a PSU and case
3. Do not want to overclock ever not ever
4. Need an i7 for heavy-CPU games

Then this is the best gaming machine: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fmXXr7

If any of the above are a problem, you will need to step down to a gtx 1060 or i5.

I also picked up a semi-used GTX 950 for my machine. That will be the second one I'm putting in my PC.

People buy z-boards and k-processors, thinking those are the only options while forgetting that 99+% of users will never and should never OC their machine. Once you remove unused features from the equation and carry forward parts that aren't past lifespan, prices start to go down. If you have a Microcenter in your area, you can usually deduct another $20 from prices again, as they sell CPUs and motherboards at a loss.

The build I chose for my son screams "Get a job if you want a better machine you freeloader!" It plays Quake though. I think.
