In it's continued push for yearly upgrades, rumors had the release of Apple's upcoming iPhone 8 pegged sometime in September. However, the top end model may be delayed because of the addition of 3D sensing technology, which would allow Apple to enter the augmented reality space.
Apple reportedly has three new iPhone 8s in the pipeline. a 4.7-inch display, a 5.5-inch and a 5.8-inch, the latter one being the one with all the new bells and whistles. According to Drexel Hamilton analyst Brian White, the release of the larger model could be delayed until December. "First off, our smartphone contact believes the 3D sensing technology and OLED displays will only be offered with the 5.8-inch iPhone 8," White told CNBC. "However, our contact strongly believes the 5.8-inch iPhone will be delayed by several weeks due to challenges around the 3-D sensing technology but still in time for the December holidays."
White did say, however, that his sources expect the two other models to be available in September as planned. The iPhone 8 is expected to have an edgeless OLED display with a Touch ID sensor in the screen. Some reports also claim facial recognition software, better internal hardware and wireless charging will be included.
Adding augmented reality to a smartphone would be the direct result of the 3 month long Pokemon Go phase...
I was on my daily 20 mile bike ride last summer and stop at my usual place to take a breather and drink some much needed water and to my surprise the BIGGEST crowd I've ever seen in this small nearby town just AMASSES.
It looked like something out of a zombie flick. I asked a passing zombie, "Hey, what the HELL is going on?"
Mind you, I was underground for a few days working hard and had not yet heard of the new game. I thought, that's weird, is it like a reunion or something?
Jesus I'm glad that died quick. I did find it cute and fun, but just like Pokemon, cute and fun didn't last long.
