Cars 3 Races to the Top of the Weekend Boxoffice Chart

As expected, the third installment in Disney and Pixar's $1 billion Cars franchise easily took the top spot, but its estimated $53.5 million in earnings told a more complicated tale.

Cars 3 had the worst opening in the series' history - Cars opened to $60.1 million and Cars 2 to $66.1 million - and it was one of the lowest debut totals for the Pixar brand.

Here is the Weekend Boxoffice Chart for the weekend of June 16th to June 18th, 2017.
  1. Cars 3 $53.5/$53.5
  2. Wonder Woman $40.7/$274.6
  3. All Eyez on Me $27.0/$27.0
  4. The Mummy $13.9/$56.5
  5. 47 Meters Down $11.5/$11.5
  6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales $8.4/$150.0
  7. Rough Night $8.0/$8.0
  8. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie $7.3/$57.9
  9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 $4.9/$374.8
  10. It Comes At Night $2.6/$11.1
  11. Megan Leavey $2.3/$8.1
  12. Baywatch $1.5/$55.1

Cars 3 managed to pass up week 3 Wonder Woman.

Go Pixar!

I don't understand how three Cars movies got made. The first one wasn't very good. They must be efficient at driving toy sales or something?

The movies and merchandise is huge with kids which is why they continue to make movies set in that universe.

And by all accounts Cars 3 really should be Cars 2, since it completely ignores that Cars 2 existed.

Not just 3 films, but an entire "land" at Disney's parks and several spinoff films. Cars prints money. Kids like cars and the distinctive character designs resonate with kids.
