Report: Atari CEO Fred Chesnais Confirms Company Is Working On New Console
Game Informer has the story.
Quote:
Earlier this month, Atari released a cryptic video on its website, showing off sleek visuals of new hardware with a wood-grain design. The video doesn't show much, but it teased that Atari is returning to the console market. Now, in an exclusive interview with VentureBeat, CEO Fred Chesnais confirms Atari is making a console comeback.
Atari's last console to release was the Atari Jaguar in 1993. Although the company played a big part in making video game history, it is barely present today in the industry. Chesnais told VentureBeat that, "We’re back in the hardware business."
Details are slim, but Chesnais confirmed that the upcoming console, codenamed the Ataribox, is PC-based and that the design of the hardware is not yet finalized.

Sweet. I'm sure they will still be trying to mostly cash in on the retro emulation craze, but if the price is right and enough great games are included it could be worthwhile.

I want one so bad, all ready. So when it fails I will have a piece of gaming history. I wish I had the money for a Jaguar back in the day.

In reality it will be a French Infrogrames box. They bought the brand and took the name some years ago then focused primarily on casino games.

I'm hoping it's an indie console, we really need a cheap box to play indie games on and a place for actual gamers to gather away from all the casuals and women.

Oh, that exists already - it's called a PC or mobile device.

He clearly said "away from all the casuals and women", so I presume he was talking about the Nvidia Shield...
I certainly expect this thing to be yet another retro console with pre-installed ROMs, like the Flashback devices.

Well the CEO has said it is PC based, so I'm guessing it isn't just some retro machine with a hand full of pre-installed ROMs.

Atari says this console will be based on PC architecture. Which blew my mind.
The first thing i thought was that they were going to be using cheap powerful mobile hardware. I honestly want them to kick ass.
Atari and Nintendo, ruling the console market. Life is as it should be.

They are innit to winnit. And with everyone all fucked up on drugs like in the 70s, now is the perfect time to release a wood grain console.

Mobile is casual only and as for PC there is no proper indie market there, steam is a AAA market not an indie market.

I wonder what Atari thinks is missing from the industry right now that they could fix. I think they definitely could make a go of it, right now, if they had a unique take on the industry. The PS4 is still selling the same game console they came out with 17 years ago, really, aside from VR. The games industry has been very stagnant and could use a good shakeup. I'm finding that in VR, but I'm sure other people would be open to other suggestions.

One thing that i would love to see is a respite from the mainstream. Nintendo did a great job with the WiiU and im sure the Switch will be great but more would be better.
I absolutely hate sifting through the ads of TV shows, movies and other bro tier or SJW-like bullcrap on the PS4. It ruins the atmosphere and to me makes the console feel like a flee market for whatever. No theme, no meaning. It sucks.
