Report: Blizzard Working On New Mobile MMO RTS Game


VG247 has the story.

That’s according to a recent job ad, since pulled, that revealed the new game is in development for mobile platforms via the Unity engine.

“Blizzard Entertainment is seeking an experienced Unity mobile client engineer to work on an unannounced MMO RTS project,” reads the job ad, archived on Icy Veins.

“The ideal applicant has an unwavering passion for mobile development and solving engineering problems unique to mobile app environments.”

Blizzard’s Hearthstone for mobiles also runs on Unity.

Rumor has it that it's something along the lines of Art of Conquest (http://aoc.lilithgames.com/en). I've never played the game, but it seems like they could do something similar with Warcraft. The likelyhood of there being some kind of perpetual money sink seems high no matter what form the game takes on. It doesn't sound interesting to me, but that doesn't mean much as I had no interest in World of Warcraft either (despite loving Warcraft I-III).

I dont know what it is about about MMO RTS on mobile but this seems be a genre that is getting a lot of attention. I've been approached by a handful of individuals lately who have obtained investment to start a studio to build these kind of games.

A lot of the design I have seen have had machine learning components to them. I suspect that's more an investment-chasing-buzzword.

On PC or in browsers, yes. There are several Eastern Asian games that are largely unknown in the West. I believe "Kingdom Under Fire II" eventually took that route, to my neverending disappointment. In the US, Trion Worlds tried something similar with "End of Nations" by Petroglyph (ex-Westwood). That was supposed to become a fairly traditional multiplayer RTS game, set in a bigger world, where you took your units and experience from battle to battle. Never saw the light of day, though.

I have no idea what an RTS would look like on mobile platforms, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
