Very good but not masterpiece-level reviews for FFVII remake.

Only Nintendo titles are allowed to be called masterpieces, even when they're not.

I think I'm going to wait for the eventual Final Fantasy 7: COMPLETE EDITION

I totally do! While all the SJW infested "game journalism" sites gush over anything Nintendo does these days, it doesn't make it remotely true!

Umm, I don't know how, but it seems you swapped link text and address:

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Review - Cruel One-Winged Angel's Thesis

What I'd like to understand and haven't got from skimming the review: I've heard that this is only a small part of of the original FFVII. To quote GameSpot: "This game may be just the first chapter in the reimagining of a much bigger story, but it seeks to uncover depth that was hitherto left to the imagination." I've also noticed a comment that not all classic characters are playable. Does the story cut out early? If so, when?

I'll certainly look this up myself at some point, but need to start working now, so if anyone can elaborate on this, it'd be greatly appreciated.

The game ends when you would leave Midgar in the original. This was about the first 6-10 hours of the original title.

I'm not even a fan of the original game, but they did a remake with only half the content? What was the point of that?

I don't like giving Kotaku clicks but for those who are interested, Schreier has a well written review that will give you a good rundown on the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Half? If I remember correctly, Midgar didn't even take up most of disc 1 (of 3) in the PlayStation version!

Hm.

Strangely, this makes the game a bit more appealing to me, because I really don't have time for a 200-hours JRPG right now. Both times I've played FFVII, I spent wayyy over 100 hours on it...

Me too. I still can't believe they don't clearly indicate on the game packaging that this is only part of the original game with new content added. Seems odd to call it a FF7 Remake but it only covers a small part of the original game. They should have added EPISODE 1 or something to the cover art. I think many will buy this and end up disappointed when they realize it only covers part of the original.

They've expanded the Midgar section to around 30 hours for the remake; while this does end when you finally escape the city, it's a much larger experience than it was in the original.

Part of me is happy to hear this, because all of the marketing for FF7 back in the day focused on Midgar and the aesthetic of that particular region. It was kind of a mindfuck back in '97 when you leave the city so early, and everything looks monumentally different from what they had been showing us at the time.

Because this is just the first part of the remake, not all of the characters from FF7 will be playable. Red XIII, for example, isn't playable...but he likely will be in the later installments.

Excited about FF7. Was totally going to skip out, but after playing the demo I couldnt stop smiling and loved how awesome it was. One of my favorite things about the original(and all old school FFs) was the ability to travel anywhere you want. It just felt so huge and satisfying flying the airship around. Makes me wonder who they will pull that off(if at all).

To those not old enough to remember or simply did not follow the marketing for the title, this is entirely true. From the original, while in-development campaign, FFVII appeared to be an RPG taking place in a single, massive steampunk and futuristic city. That we left Midgar at all wasn't unexpected, it was that we never really went back because instead, we traipsed around a world.

Much of FFVII's brilliance was in the story not being what we expected, from even the information on the back of the CD case and manual, to its then state-of-the-art graphics, were ephemeral. Moments in time. This is why the fandom has always clamored for a remake, a chance to experience the sensation of the game again. And more than just replacing the graphics, it seems SE decided to remake the surprises and subverted expectations as well.

Now bring it to the PC, please.

I always found this one funny, because it depends on what level you look at it. Aside from the marketing setting it up as a surprise, when you do a deep dive analysis of the story itself, it's fairly standard, it's what you'd expect and what you want from an epic, the themes, character archetypes, story structure, etc. In that sense, the actual content wasn't really more surprising than how other stories typically try to surprise you. But personally I don't depend on that anyway, I appreciated enough the quality of execution. I think a lot of people that weren't already used to Asian culture aesthetics and story telling habits, were also taken by the different taste of things at the time.
