Do Metal Jesus Rocks Videos Affect Retro Game Prices?

Quote:
Metal Jesus Rocks has over 500k subscribers and is known for posting videos of retro video games. Ranging from hidden gems to HDMI solutions, Metal Jesus has produced quality content for the past 8 years.

But when he posts these videos, he comes under fire for inflating the prices of the games he showcases. But no one really knows how much. Until Now.

I researched over 265 games that he's showcased over the past five years. In addition to the short term effect of his video, I also covered the long term effect on the pricing.

So how exactly does Metal Jesus Rocks influence retro video game prices? Find out!
I'm a personal fan of Metal Jesus, and thought this video was fair. It's not MJs fault prices do what they do, and if anything it show how much people value his opinion on games and hardware.

Man, this really shows what a success Metal Jesus has become! He mentions something and the price goes through the roof.

That's just awesome! Congrats buddy!

Dear MJ,

Could you please PM me the games you're going to cover a week in advance?

Interesting take; it seems the conclusion is "maybe" and "it depends". If you paid attention over half of the games he's talked about have either fallen in price or been flat over time.

Even those that spike is just good news, it is the same ripple effect all products have when an influencer brings up their products. When Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridgeshire wears something the sales on that item skyrocket. Same thing when people do (or don't) dress a celeb for a special event.

There's a reason Stephen Colbert and the rest of the hosts of late night get their suits comped by high end companies (read the credits) and it isn't out of the goodness of the companies hearts.

I tried watching MJ but didn't last one video due to the swearing. Too much can be too much at times.

I can't say that I've heard much swearing in his videos, but I haven't watched all of them and it's possible I just glossed over 'em.

With that being said...this is an awfully strange stance to be taking at a site like this.

Even if the games only increase in value for a short time, I would think content creators could turn this into a form of "insider trading" to make some cash:
  1. Create video which features several games
  2. Prior to video release, acquire multiple copies of games in video
  3. Release video
  4. Sell games for profit
MJ doesn't come across to me as someone who would do something like this, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are other content creators that are doing this right now. It sounds like it could be pretty lucrative. And 100% legal (though it may drive off ones audience if they find out...)

That would be an interesting investigation if someone would do it. Watch channels who put out game reviews, then watch eBay and see if there is a pattern of the same person putting up games from those reviews up for sale.

DRAMA!

Airblade had a huge jump then it came back down

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...e+ps2&_sacat=0

The Red Star (a $20 cib) game is now $65+ LOL! Its not even that good. Its so funny to see the MJ effect.

Also, the XBOX original games seem to come down in price quickly after. I don't see the point to having a physical copy for XBOX on XBOX One since you won't be able to play those if XBL goes down for the XBOX One (I do see the point if you have an original xbox).

Plenty of folks do this, across numerous sectors of the economy. Folks pump and dump all the time in stocks. It's quite common.

The rich gotta get rich, and stay rich, somehow! An easy way is to screw over little guys/gals with artificial asset price inflation.

Weird. I don't recall him ever swearing, and I've watched a lot of his videos. Perhaps my definition of "swearing" is more loose than yours.

I also don't recall any gratuitous swearing from memory. If so, it might have been on his "I Hate You" series. Those awful games would have me swearing like a sailor. Top Gun on NES is one that would give the Pope a potty mouth.

Did I hear right that Metal Jesus has half a million followers? I didn't know there were so many retro gamers out there. I guess I'm not the only old guy who still plays games.

I'm kind of so what on this.... it draws attention to specific games for collectors... clearly some is driven by people speculating.. but if a lot of copies exist then it's still a risk as lots people see the video and dig out their copy to sell hoping for the "MJ EFFECT" but it could reduce due to a flooded market.

Nothing like influencers being paid in shiny things to advertise products that companies are selling.

So overall... so what if MJs videos affect second hand prices?

Actually does commenting on popular Youtubers increase your views and followers to your own channel... I'd rather see an analysis of that..
EDIT: Quick answer is yes .. all his other videos are double digit (a quick sample and its usually ~50) and his MJ video is in excess of 21000 currently . Fair enough do what you gotta do to promote yourself I say...

Will be interesting to see the figures for May... https://socialblade.com/youtube/chan...KGsrgNrezmCFSw
