What You Can Expect From the Next Generation of Gaming

In a random Monday Morning post, Microsoft's Phil Spencer has dropped some news & hardware info about the upcoming Xbox Series X.

Quote:
A superior balance of power and speed

Compared to the previous generation, Xbox Series X represents a superior balance of power and speed in console design, advancing on all technological fronts to delivering amazing, dynamic, living worlds and minimize any aspects that can take you out of the experience. Our job at Team Xbox is to give teams the tools they need to achieve their ambitions and tap into the console’s power with efficiency, a few of which we’re detailing today. Raw power is just part of the story:
  • Next Generation Custom Processor: Xbox Series X is our most powerful console ever powered by our custom designed processor leveraging AMD’s latest Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architectures. Delivering four times the processing power of an Xbox One and enabling developers to leverage 12 TFLOPS of GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) performance – twice that of an Xbox One X and more than eight times the original Xbox One. Xbox Series X delivers a true generational leap in processing and graphics power with cutting edge techniques resulting in higher framerates, larger, more sophisticated game worlds, and an immersive experience unlike anything seen in console gaming.
  • Variable Rate Shading (VRS): Our patented form of VRS empowers developers to more efficiently utilize the full power of the Xbox Series X. Rather than spending GPU cycles uniformly to every single pixel on the screen, they can prioritize individual effects on specific game characters or important environmental objects. This technique results in more stable frame rates and higher resolution, with no impact on the final image quality.
  • Hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing: You can expect more dynamic and realistic environments powered by hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing – a first for console gaming. This means true-to-life lighting, accurate reflections and realistic acoustics in real time as you explore the game world.

...and they are reporting backwards compatibility with the original XBOX, X360, Xbox One...correct? That's damn cool if true.

Just saw this on Twitter: if you buy a digital copy of Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One, you'll get a copy for the Xbox Series X automatically.

That's a good idea for those who want to replay the game, but on a newer system and (hopefully) better performance.

Not a bad deal, but will probably buy it on PC in case of mods and graphics tweaking.

Uhh no. The Xbox One X is near dead silent and this is being designed by the same engineers. It's PS4 and PS4 Pro that have had the horrendous noise issues. And by the looks of the PS5 design it will also be noise central. Also there will only be ONE giant fan confirmed in Series X.

The Xbox One X has this today. So why not? It's just going to be the same tech, it's all software.

We all know it, so...no need to remind us.

They lost me with their Xbrick 360 Xtra Crispy 'gotta be online in YOUR gamertag to play your games for a few years while we fix our broken hardware and licensing shit' lol.

Yup, it's old, but that's how you lose customers for good. Like they did with me. I haven't spent a dime with them since.

I about to build a new PC this week, with a 2080ti. This looks awesome, and I'll get it at some point because I love consoles, but the vast majority of my gaming time is on PC now. I can play Halo and everything they put out on my PC anyways, so the console is just for those times when I have company over or I just want to sit on the couch and use the big screen.

From a Bloomberg report on the possible PS5 component shortages:
Quote:
Most of the components for the console have been locked down, the people said, including the cooling system, which is unusually expensive at a few dollars per unit. Typically, companies would spend less than a dollar, but Sony opted to lavish more on making sure heat dissipation from the powerful chips housed inside the console isn’t an issue.
We'll see.

They haven't shown off the look of the PS5 yet.

Not just digital, physical too. Many games will be like that, including all first party MS ones released around launch like Halo Infinite. For at least 1-2 years after launch first party games will work on Xbox One and Series X from the same disc or digital purchase and will scale according to hardware.

Ha! It's the combination of a bunch of overtime the last two months and much planning!

This build still hurts. But it'll be worth it!

Here it is if anyone wants to look. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RrRxx6

Nice Build!

You don't think an SSD as your secondary drive instead of that spinner is important enough to drop to a 2080 Super?

It is all about gaming with a couch and 4K TV, not a desk and a keyboard.

I dunno man.

I very recently thought it was trending that direction, but I just bought a 32" Dell (3220dgf)2k curved monitor and an UPlift (motorized) standing desk and I couldn't be happier.
