Looks cool and all, but if I have to put on gear that mimics deep sea diving, I'm not feeling it.

Yup. I'm holding out for the neural chip interface.

I tried out an HTC Vive last friday at a friends place, and I have to be honest, it widely surpassed my expectations. It's hard to explain it, but my brain really felt immersed into the world, and I bought it. Count me as a pro-VR gamer from now on.

But I don't think we're even seeing the tip of the iceberg yet, maybe from a huge distance. As the tech is improved, we'll get to try out some really cool experiences in the future, can't wait to get there though!

I can see this working well enough, batman has enough gadgets and tech to make moving around plausible enough. I'ts still going to be an overly simple game, but we're not going to see the end of that any time soon as devs just have no idea how to design for these things yet.

apparently you've never been diving because it's amazing and so is VR, you should try that too.

a lot of it is, you're right, but give the devs time to figure out creative ways to make games around this new tech. What's not a gimmick are games that lend themselves to the tech naturally like Sims. Play project cars or elite dangerous with an HMD and you'll see it's not a gimmick.
