Forbes: The New Atari Console Is Called The 'Atari VCS' And I Still Don't Get It

Quote:
What does this mean? The system will have classic Atari content but it's more than a retro device and it will 'change the way you interact with your TV." How will it do this? It seems like a very bold promise with very few details to back it up.

But nothing about this console screams 'innovation' at me. If anything, I'm reminded of all the talk about the Ouya back when it landed on Kickstarter promising to "disrupt" the gaming industry. It didn't quite go down like that.

So what will make Atari's new system stand out other than brand recognition? The system has a custom AMD processor and runs a version of Linux, meaning it will be able to play some PC games as well as retro Atari titles, but that alone isn't enough to really make a splash in the gaming market. It has a retro design that evokes the old Atari 2600 but that's only going to appeal to a niche audience at this point.

I suppose some people will be excited to play those old Atari games, but there's no way this will be as popular or in-demand as Nintendo's mini retro NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition.

What's there to get about it?

Atari wants to cash in on it's old name, and GOOD for them. Hopefully they can sell a metric fuck ton of these so they can replenish the coffers and start making some sweet shit again.

They're called Atari. And they invoke memories for me whether or not it's the same business.

It's an android set top box. Besides piracy, which is much harder than it used to be, these are a solution in search of a problem.

No they're still Infogrames, it's still the same people running the publisher from before they bought the rights to the Atari name. Not a single person from the original days of Atari is affiliated with it's current branding. Atari inc. and Atari Interactive are officially listed as subsidiaries.

I still don't see what this thing could possibly do that would make them a bunch of money. Atari nostalgia is pretty niche. And even then, I think I read a few months ago that this thing is going to be priced for $250-300. That's a pretty pricey Atari emulator. I'm sure it'll have the ability to play android games and some PC games as well, but that hasn't worked as a selling point for a set top box in the past.

I have no idea what they could possibly do with this thing to make it worthwhile. Maybe they'll drop Project Rainway pre-installed on it and say "look, it can play all the games!". Or their own proprietary version of a streaming service. Either way, I just can't see anything that could possibly give this thing any legs. I mean, they couldn't even get this thing on Kickstarter because they have no working prototype.

Not one, but TWO entirely separate and utterly useless shitcoins? Clearly this company is all about sound business decisions.

It let's you play games but also order pizza/food from local places for delivery while PLAYING THE GAME. The red button activates the new Super-Selfie-Mode which streams your gameplay, your reaction to your own gameplay, and sends tweets every 2 minutes about your gameplay. Bam, it's a TV revolution.
