Disney Finalizes Acquisition of Fox

Quote:
Today, Twenty-First Century Fox shareholders got quite a surprise. Their shareholder letter now has The Walt Disney Company letterhead (see below). This comes after initial reports that Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox was near the finish line, followed by weeks of media silence.

Last year, Disney had already received conditional approvals from both the European Union and U.S. regulators. Back in July 2018 shareholders from both companies approved all proposals related to the acquisition, but no solid date was set for the close. Disney CEO Bob Iger had previously stated that “it could take up to 12 months for the acquisition to close,” while President of Fox Peter Rice had said to employees, ” the company will be logistically ready to close on Jan. 1.”

It now looks like the January 1, 2019 date was more in line with the actual acquisition timeline. The Disney-Fox acquisition marks an incredible shift in the entertainment industry and there will definitely be more news about it in the coming months. Stay tuned.

Huge for Disney's digital streaming service. The demise of Netflix moves a bit closer on the horizon.

Netflix won't even feel this. Disney believe super hero movies and star wars are what people pay a monthly fee for and they are wrong. People pay for a streaming service for original series content that they can watch every evening. Netflix understands this and invest accordingly, i don't see Disney doing it any time soon.

Also, it seems that Netflix original content is exploding right now, it seems that every other day they are launching a new series or a new movie, and the quality is increasing every day too. And Netflix is amazing in the way that any content can go there without censoring (besides porn).

I will probably subscribe to disney's streaming too, they also have enormous content that I would watch.

The amount of content they're spending money on is both great and worrisome; I'm wondering how long they can maintain spending $13 billion on original content while still remaining viable.

Companies like Disney can get away with spending ridiculous amounts of money on their movies because they monetize their films beyond the price of entry(Merchandising!). They also get money from every single person every single time they watch a movie, as opposed to a single monthly subscription for all of the content you can consume.

Netflix is spending money left and right on all sorts of stuff. I'm just wondering how long they can keep it up.

This is utter nonsense. NONE of the big streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video) grew out of "original content" that people could watch, they grew out of huge libraries of conveniently available content folks wanted to binge watch (or in Amazon's case out of a quick and cheap shipping program). The original content production has occurred as a RESULT of the money folks poured in to get easy anytime access to libraries of content (or shipping, for Amazon).

As I said in the other thread, warning signs are blaring (and their stock price is part of the warning system as it tanks):

They've repeatedly missed on projected subscriber numbers...

Their stock is tanking, down from over $400 to $250s in seven months...

Disney is dialing up their own streaming service this year...

Disney just closed on their 20th Century Fox purchase and will move those properties to their own service(s)...

Netflix has over $10 billion in debt and keeps adding to it...

Netflix cash flow is projected to continue to be negative for years to come...

And on and on. Great service. I subscribe. AOL was awesome in its day too. Now it's a pimple on the Internet's ass.

Ultimately, the question is: Can Netflix stay competitive and big with its original content efforts while it loses gigantic portions of its library to original content owners' own streaming efforts and while borrowing gobs and gobs of money to make original content. The market is currently saying "iffy...maybe not going to be so big going forward, time to lower value" and I'm saying "NO, they can't. And won't."

It was the best of times... it was the worst of times.

We live in a time where we have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to entertainment. We asked to break the back of cable and this is one of the repercussions. I personally won't subscribe to a Disney streaming service just like I didn't subscribe to CBS for Star Trek Discovery but, man, what a world where I have that choice!

They broke up the Bell phone system for having too much power, now we have a bunch of mini bells, (AT&T, Verizon, Century Link etc.) Who still have too much power.

Between all the properties and networks Comcast owns, and now the rest practically being owned by Disney (ABC, ESPN, Fox etc) it's a shame that our elected officials only kowtow to lobby dollars rather than the Americans that put them in office to begin with. No wonder the MSM, including Fox all push the same damn agenda.

So... here's my (probably unpopular) take:

These companies do not make themselves rich. The consumers do. The money they have didn't suddenly appear out of nowhere, it came out of your wallet. Our wallet. WE gave them that power.

I see this as people throwing money at Disney, and then complaining about the way Disney uses that money and demanding the government step in and FORCE Disney to use that money the way the consumers want them to. For things we need to survive (food, communications, travel, etc) I can see some minor government intervention to ensure a level playing field. But for entertainment?

As far as I am concerned, I am not entitled to Disney products. I cannot force them to make a trip to Disney World more affordable for me, they are allowed to charge what they want. And quite frankly, that is the way it should be.

The solution is simple: Stop making them rich. Take away that money. Want to support Netflix? Then keep subscribing even if their library shrinks and don't subscribe to Disney.

Will it suck? Yeah, probably, which is why it will probably never happen. People are just too addicted to entertainment. But is the solution is to involve the Government and force their hand so we can continue to enjoy their entertainment the way we like?

That... doesn't sit right with me.

Big companies rig the game to make themselves rich. They write laws that they then push through Congress through lobbyists and paid-for-politicians to make encroachments on their fiefdoms impossibly expensive for smaller competitors, or they outright extend their monopoly on a product indefinitely through legal changes.

Disney, Mickey, and copyright law.

Anyone want to take bets on whether Mickey will go copyright free in 2023? Magic Eight Ball says "HELL NO!"

One of the nice things about a small government with less power over the people is that these companies can't just go and buy the power like they do now.

No one ever said or advocated zero regulation ever. Most of us are for small government that's fiscally conservative. The straw mans you toss out are just silly Pat.

Surprisingly enough, the usual suspects involved with that lobbying didn't actually bother this time around; a bunch of stuff just went public domain three days ago because of it.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this get extended again, but we'd be in the curious position of only having the classic design of Mickey Mouse in the public domain; all of the more recent versions would still be copyrighted.

They can just work together to form cartels with nothing to stop them. See the telecommunications (internet) industry creating a map of the US to divvy out and intentionally not competing to give the consumer little to no choice.

wow so people like monopolies ? so you like getting raped from your internet provider ?
You must be in some kinky stuff xD

Free market only works when there are no cartels with fixed prices and real competition...
Big example is the cost of big farma...

Even in Greece with the huge dept we get free healthcare (if you worked 2 months the last 2 years)... I saw a bill from a Cousin in NY of almost half a million ... and the same bill in Greece would be 50$ + some paper work....
