Star Citizen is Selling Virtual Plots of Land For Up to £96 ($100) a Pop

Eurogamer has the story.

Quote:
Star Citizen is now selling virtual plots of land for up to £96.

The space game, which already sells spaceships for hundreds of pounds, now lets you buy what are called Land Claim Licenses. This is a virtual certificate that entitles you to claim a parcel of land in the game - although the mechanic is not yet live.

There are two Land Claim Licenses available: the standard costs £48. This gets you a single 4km x 4km parcel of land. The second is the "estate" version, which gets you a single 8km x 8km parcel of land.

Currently, you can only buy these licenses with real world money, although developer Cloud Imperium Games has said you'll eventually be able to buy them with in-game credits, which you earn while playing the game.

Perhaps in anticipation of difficult questions around the sale of virtual land in a game that isn't even out yet, Cloud Imperium issued a disclaimer on its website explaining the whole thing. The gist is the licenses are on sale to help fund ongoing development of Star Citizen. Here's the text:

"Please Note: These claim licenses are being made available for pledging to help fund Star Citizen's development. The ability to obtain these claim licenses will ultimately be available for in-game credits and/or otherwise earnable through play in the game. Pledging for these claim licenses now allows us to include deeper features in the Star Citizen game, and is not required for starting the game."

There's even an in-universe explanation for the sale of these licenses:

"The UEE [Star Citizen's space government] sells claim licenses for the same reasons as any government - to raise revenue to fund public benefit programs, to liberalise its economy, to spur growth and tax revenue, and to fund the military campaign against the Vanduul."

I am glad I did not back this game. The longer SC goes with out putting out the full game the more and more I think it never will launch fully.

Lol....I gave them $200 for some ship that isn't even available anymore. I literally haven't logged in ever, since I'm waiting patiently for them to release a full game, but they can go fuck themselves if they think they'll get another penny until they are done.

I'm in for $130, but to be honest, I just heard the other day of someone requesting a refund and it being honored.

I think the time to get out is NOW.

Plus having an extra 130$ for xmas time wouldn't hurt!

Just initiated a formal refund request. We'll see what happens.

I honestly dont mind waiting and letting them have my money for development. I just wish they would stop with the feature creep and develop a persistent universe wing commander.

Well well well ... I bet none read the Q&A

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/c...Claim-License/

All for the clicks :/

TL;DR is this:
These claims are essentially preordering the paperwork and beacon to claim a parcel of land, which you still have to hunt down and prospect (if you want to see if there's anything worthwhile there, which will vary depending who's looking to own it).
It's only a legal document and a beacon. Unless you shoot the interlopers looking to walk around your plot, it does nothing other than being able to report them for trespassing.
This only applies to UEE space.
These will be 100% purchasable in-game for credits, and the mechanic isn't close to being implemented.
There will be billions of square kilometers. Lots and Estates are 4◊4 km (16 sq km) and 8◊8 km (64 sq km). Do the math.

I'm not sure why you're holding Star Citizen up to this standard. There are a LOT of games that spend extended periods of time in pre-release form right now. Many of them operating in a money-making status for years.

This is just the new normal.

Are you able to build on this plot? Have satellites over it? A space station?

Its old news... Now they find out that you can rent land that you can build shit ...

In some years they will find out again that you can buy in-game credits with real money !!! (that was the plan in the kickstarter campaign )

i like space ship games, but this game seems incredibly money hungry, and have a shitty track record of delivering on content. Hopefully one day it is fun and something respectable but the odds seem against it.

I only backed at the basic $35 level. I'm enjoying the trainwreck and it was worth my $35 bucks. Either I get years of dama for the price of a good movie + dinner or eventually what might be a damn fine game comes out and I have an OK ship with lifetime insurance. I knew Robert's reputation from back in the day but I never expected this level of feature and scope creep.

Either way I win.

Never put a single dollar into this and know I never will. Anybody who still has money it is a goddamn fool. That fucking weirdo "Clifford aka Miku" immediately (and predictably) bought $1000 worth of imaginary land claims from this farce of game. Shills defending Star Citizen should be banned and castrated.

HAHA. I feel no pity for the idiots who keep dumping money into this failboat.

This game will never be completed, and people need to stop defending it. This is beyond absurd, now. The devs know that this is a honeypot, so they're going to milk it as long as fools keep shoveling cash their way.

I think these devs should be getting as much (or more) flak as EA has been getting lately.

So, you are not buying real estate, but a government license, where the real estate itself has no market value yet, since there is no market. Man, I wish I could invent virtual real estate and charge a fixed-fee to claim a piece of it. Run out of land? Just make more! That's a cash-printing machine right there. How is Second Life doing by the way?

I mean, fuck, I've never seen a game continue to add stuff to its store before it was even launched. I wish this would have some kind of impact akin to the Atari ET debacle, but that kind of seismic failure just doesn't seem possible. Even the Battlefront II thing probably did little more than a dent into EA's prospect as a going concern.

It's just difficult to get worked up over how insane this one thing is when it has become normalized to expect naked grabs for money and power from most large gaming companies, with some exceptions.
