I can certainly see this tech continuing to mature, but it doesn't seem all that attractive to me at the moment. The price isn't attractive to me personally and the design brings back bad memories of the PVS 7s.

Okay, it looked similar by memory. You can tell how much I've looked into this :P

Why is it called HTC instead of Valve's Vive? I dunno. Still, this is the one to have.

Did they ever announce what their 'breakthrough' was?

Anenome: Valve's HTC unit includes the motion controllers, a pass through box for ports and two lighthouse sensors. The lighthouse sensors capture full body movement within a room, where as the OR is a seated experience only. If this feature is used in a single game, of which I know none in development, it will be amazing and worth the price. The unit has a camera on it for this purpose, as it will show line-trace real room features, so you do not walk into a wall or chair while exploring your virtual orgy porn land.

I quite agree. Back when I looked into Valve's offering it seemed extraordinary even then. I guess the Lighthouse sensors are what I hadn't heard about before.

Mmm, I still think a killer app for VR will be able to incorporate your actual house/rnviron into a game somehow. Perhaps they will be able to do that with this.

That's more a Hololens feature. The Hololens may never see the light of day.

I just read an article saying that MS was gun shy on hololense because of the lack of success for Kinect.

The Kinect was a huge success for the period of time between people seeing it and people using it.

This Bullet Train demo? Yeah sorry still think it's a gimmick, try again in another 10 years. Total Deja vu from the last time the industry claimed VR would be the next big thing a decade plus or so ago.
What a complete fool.

Legit lol; but it was in part due to people lying about it could do. Remember the lie that was Project Milo?

There are many success stories that exist in the realm between sale and product return. The Super Soaker 200 leaked, returned Power Glove units filled the hallways of Toys R Us and the Kinect sold millions before promptly being burned in effigy by fat people until to move after jumping over a fake log headed towards their raft. Technology is actually filled with lying case studies--I own two smart watches. Note that I own them, I do not actually wear them. I once had a Leap Motion. My car's navigation used to love directing me over a bridge that fell into the ocean months prior. Learning what actually works and what is fun to watch on a video from CES and E3 are a big part of life.

Hey, now. It's an $800 set of paperweights. You get five devices, after all.

I can't wait to get mine. I'm really tempted to build a back pack PC and roam around outside to mess with people. That would probably take too much time and cost more than its worth but still...

Honestly, I do think we're at the point where we'll finally see VR take off in the near future. I'm not sure if the Oculus or Vive will be the devices to really kick things off...but I'm sure it's close.

These price tags are just too high for most people, though. It's all going to boil down to the software created to take advantage of these devices at this point. The hardware could be flawless, but if there isn't anything compelling to do with them outside of glorified tech demos, it's going to fail.

Yeah it would be nice to see some flagship software be pushed with advertising to make the public more aware and reassure current supporters. They're still too secretive about all of it whether were talking about the Vive, Rift, Morpheus or others. Some people set their expectations of VR way too high or they're the ones who think of the Lawn Mower man when they hear virtual reality due to a misunderstanding of the technology and intentions.

I love tech. I love VR. I remember as a kid the local science center has a vr setup not dissimilar to the vive (and like 20 years ago too) and it was the greatest thing ever.

however, I would much rather see AR take off. I don't need to escape reality, and I don't have a pressing need to be surround by my games, even if it is neat. What I want is computers and tech to better integrate with real life.

AR to me is more exciting than VR. Games will likely have a much easier time incorporating your environment, than trying to replace it entirely. It will take some programming tricks, but should be quite doable.

I've long dreamed of an AR game that would put skins over your house and neighborhood but preserve geometry and turn it into a zombie survival game. That would be truly wicked.

It's the zombie apocalypse, in your own neighborhood, the game has to be smart enough to recognize houses and then like and place zombies places based on detected geometry. Every game is different by user therefore.

I do have to say though, after watching this second video, I don't buy into the implication that it was a "lie", as the video is pretending.

Was it pre-rendered? Yes. Of course. Ever bit of preview video we get of games these days is pre-rendered. But the developers clearly KNEW what they were doing when they rendered the character.

That whole "faces on tv" thing is a pet-peeve of mine and I always hate it in comic books when the artists renders the face in perspective. But, at the same time, I was watching cartoon (C.O.P.S.) and it occurred to me how out of continuity the shots would look if they didn't do it like that. Granted this was a 3 camera scene, but if you don't show some perspective on the speaker, then the viewer gets lost in the scene as it changes cuts. Maybe the art director for the Milo video knew that, even if they never made use of those cuts.

The bottom line use the accusing someone of "lying" is something that people jump to too much on the internet.
