I never said it was uncharted territory; it's how things work in the PC world, as well as with mobile devices.

It is, however, unique to the console space.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I was just saying that they are emulating Apple's strategy of, specifically, doing from numbered iterations to a single brand-name led portfolio of hardware.

When did this happen? Because when I was forced to upgrade to ... ios8 I think? That broke a LOT of software and many of my favorite games stopped working. Apple, of course, pointed the finger at publishers as it being their fault and they needed to upgrade their games. Some did, but most were older games, so the publishers had moved on. As a result, I lost a lot of apps that I had paid for.

Has that been fixed?

I stopped buying software on iOS because of that. I also stopped upgrading iOS on my devices, which is a pain in the ass as Apple forces upgrades (they are not optional without some monkeying around with files, and even then the upgrade eventually queues again). The only thing you can do is delay installing them. I have to tap "No, I don't want to install right now" ever day I use my devices now.

Wasn’t that when their OS moved from 32 bit to 64 bit?

Yuppp….. back when Steve Jobs was around you'd get like one iOS update per year that broke nothing. Now the assholes push one out every week.

Yes. Thats why i put “theoretically”. There was the one instance of no longer supporting 32 bit software. But that is the only cutoff.

Cutoffs like that are inevitable and would happen even with Microsoft's current plan. Eventually, older hardware is going to get phased out and no longer supported and older software will eventually not work as well with the latest releases.

It's inevitable but hopefully, we won't see too many hard cutoffs like the one we saw with Apple.
