Nvidia Shield Console Released #NvidiaShield #Nvidia

Via Legit Reviews:

Quote:
NVIDIA will have two versions of the NVIDIA SHIELD Console that are being made available to purchase on May 28th. You’ll have the basic NVIDIA SHIELD 16GB Android TV for $199.99 and then the NVIDIA SHIELD Pro 500GB Android TV that runs $299.99. Both versions of the Android TV device will come with a gaming remote controller and an HDMI 2.0 cable. The main difference is the amount of storage space, but keep in mind that both versions have a microSD card slot that can expand storage by 128GB if you wanted to purchase a microSD card to do so. The NVIDIA SHIELD Pro also comes with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! (Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! is planned to be released on SHIELD on July 1st, 2015, but the release date is dependent on the game publisher).
Thanks Zane!

Anandtech has a really good review up with benchmarks: http://www.anandtech.com/show/9289/t...roid-tv-review

Mine should be here tomorrow and I'll be using it mainly to stream games from my PC to the living room. I've been doing it with my shield portable but this is a better form-factor, fits in well with my other home theater equipment and is faster than the shield portable. Plus it's Android TV based, so it has a better 10' UI than the portable for the most part.

Once all the apps I use on my Google TV are confirmed working on the shield console I'll be replacing my Google TV with this entirely. The only real downside vs. the Google TV box (that I know of at the moment anyway) is lack of HDMI passthrough. My wife and I really like the fact that we can use GTV & Tivo at the same time without having to switch inputs. It's not a huge deal though.

I'm curious about this. The $199 one seems like it could be pretty damn useful if it goes on sale. I'm really happy with my Fire TV when it comes to streaming movies and such, which was less than half the cost of this thing.

I would be too if the built in plex player passed surround sound properly, but it doesn't... Sounds like this will which makes it very enticing

I don't have surround sound on my living room TV so while I've heard of that problem it hasn't directly affected me.

The Plex app on the fire TV is also something like 6 or 7 versions behind the normal android version now and that is frustrating me, it doesn't have all the cool music features that were recently introduced.

This looks to be the best device for cord cutters on the market right now. Waiting for more real world reviews to roll in before picking one up. Hopefully there is a workaround for the no-passthrough.

Just in time for the android release of Sling TV too. A la carte live broadcast TV (including all the ESPNs), without the cable bill. It's a good time to cut the cord.

Looking forward to the followup post when this hits "bargain bin" status.

Judging from Ouya, this has failure written all over it.

Ouya launched with a SoC that was shockingly out of date and a proprietary interface that prevented Google Play from working out of the box.

This device annihilates everything on the market and is being pimped by Google.

Yeah, both consoles that used mobile SoCs, that's about the extent of what they have in common

I'll be picking one up soon, I have tons of Android games, own tons of media on Google Play and am pretty heavily invested into the Android platform anyway- the fact that it has the whole PC Streaming built in along with the absurdly powerful SoC is just gravy.

I have AppleTV, Roku 2, Fire TV, and PS3. Do I really need this?

Probably... *sigh*

Comparing it to the Ouya is a joke. As pointed out the Ouya was underpowered on release and the Shield is top of the line hardware that currently benches faster than all the other existing mainstream android devices and the latest iPad (in gaming benchmarks) and Surface Pro.

On top of that it's backed by a huge company that's already got tons of pull with gaming devs and the money to see this through as opposed to a startup that pulled in around $8.5 million.

Just got mine and I'm setting it up, the hardware is very solidly built and looks great and so far the experience has been good, though I'm installing the OS update currently.

I'm sure you can find it for $20 off somewhere.
