Apex Legends is down - EA "on it"

It looks like EA's hot new hit Apex Legends is experiencing some serious issues atm. Gamers are currently greeted with an infinite load screen. This issue has been going on for nearly 4 hours!

The issue seems to be caused by a recent patch push which was supposed to grant users with more frequent Apex packs and a new weapon.

Let's hope they can get it fixed soon because it's not a good look when the hottest game on the planet goes down for this length of time in the first few weeks of availability!

MP only games having server issues near release? Actually it sounds like every "live game as a service" title released over the last 5 years.

I would blame Anthem for this. Apex Legends had some issues whenever there was a large number of Anthem players. EA is just being cheap bitches and not bringing enough servers online to keep their services running properly across all Origin titles.

That's just bad architecture then. They should have separated the compute between games. In all likelihood they are using AWS and shared a pool of compute instead of dedicated pool.

It is surprising with the advents in scaling servers / computers that being unable to cost-in and scale server resources for first-day or patch-day spikes isn't a thing. I had someone complain the other day about how a new game, Anthem I think, was having first day troubles.

All I could tell him was "No shit!" and then draw out the Walmart Black Friday stampede comparison.

Well on the bright side, we know the sexual orientation of all the characters.

Even though AWS has "elastic" compute, the application still has to be able to adapt to these changes. If this was designed with IaaS in the backend, it would do that.

But all too often in distributed computing the applications still are designed to talk from server to server, instead of running on a native platform (PaaS).

AWS is a joke. They should have gone with Azure, or my favorite, the IBM cloud.

This is EA we're talking about with both titles, cheap doesn't even start with them when it comes to spinning up hardware to meet demand. I also read a post today where someone was bitching about Anthem as if it's the first online game Bioware has ever made, apparently people forget they've already made an MMO in Starwars:The Old Republic.

You have to play uber aggressive in the game. If you try to play it slow like PUBG or a little more strategic like Fortnite you will get killed. One of the reasons for this is that the game favors the shooter based on the netcode, so the sooner you can put bullets into an enemy, the better off you will be in the confrontation.
