Hello Games Priced No Man's Sky at $60, Not Sony #NoMansSky

TweakTown has the Story.

Quote:
For the longest time, I thought that No Man's Sky's $60 price tag was a result of some business decision between Hello Games and its distributors, including Sony and iam8bit. But that doesn't make a lot of sense considering No Man's Sky is $60 on Steam and GoG, too.

Still, I thought it wasn't as simple as Hello Games arbitrarily deciding to charge that much for their indie game--it just didn't seen possible for them to be that greedy. I mean who in their right mind would put the highest possible pricetag on a product that barely resembles the game you spent years hyping?

As it turns out, though, Hello Games is that greedy.

In a recent YouTube LIVE video, Geoff Keighley delivered a revealing inside perspective from someone close to Hello Games and No Man's Sky's development.

"I had many strong discussions with Sean and the team as they led up to launch, and disagreed with them charging $60. I think what they should've done is put it out as an early access game, and let people play it and sort of build it up over time with the team and the community--change the game over time with feedback," Keighley said, and I think he's right on the money.
This comes as no surprise. Many readers here at EvAv were not buying into Hello Game's pre-launch claims about the game. They should have sold the game for $20.

Thanks, Mix-Master!

In one fell swoop one company seemingly legitimizes piracy.

Yes you could make cases for other companies and products, but this is current, most current... whatever.

Did you buy it? Yes, you...did you buy it?

You're the problem, as much as they are. Stop it.

I did actually buy it. I feel sorta cheated, let down... I just wanted to believe it would be better. It could have been better i think, but i admit i have no idea what exactly went into it.

Its still cool to just kick around for a little bit, but will probably never reinstalled again.

I will wait for it to hit 20. They should have done 30 tops for it, but oh well. I guess they learned a big lesson this time around.

I bought it at $48 (GCU to the rescue), played it for probably 15ish hours, sold it back for $30. I'm not overly pissed at the $18 entertainment cost...

Not $20.... that's ridiculous. It's way more of an effort and deeper than "The Witness" and that was an one man indie at $40.

So $40 would have been the ideal price point for a game that essentially has no point, no endgame, a nice sandbox, but no story.

Why buy it? It was hyped as a game for thousands of people to play together in a persistent universe they were to name and shape. As it stands, there are neither the players left (Seriously, a thousand) and none of the promised features or gameplay. It's overpriced at $20.

I'll buy it at $20 just to experience the tech. As far as the $60 pricetag is concerned that only makes sense if they were a company set out to make money. How dare they!? Heck if I had an indie studio and had a sneaking suspicion that my game would be a one-hit-wonder I sure as hell would try and maximize my earnings. Go "early access" and put a low pricetag on it? Only if it makes business sense. Indies can rarely afford to do fan-service games.

A product ios worth what people will pay, don't blame the company, blame the idiots who paid $60. If you had half a brain, you knew it wasn't going to live up to the hype.

I'm honestly surprised at the amount of hate they've gotten for how this went down. Sheesh.

Agreed. It may be bad but it somehow became one of those geek crusades to hate this game and crush the developers.

Or maybe people are angry that they were charged $60 for a product that wasn't what was advertised? Yeah, I think that's it. The hatred isn't due to it merely being boring and mediocre but because it is a different game than what was displayed.

He made the classic mistake of overpromising and underdelivering, but it seems there's a lot of people out there ready to take up literal pitchforks.

Don't think so. I think its a reflection of their anger at having been dumb enough to believe the advertising and thereby wasting $60 for snake oil. The central feature of advertising is not truth, it's maximizing the possibility of parting people from their money.

Figure it out, folks. Buying at launch is a fool's errand. Wait at least a few days, if not a week or two. The truth comes out, and all it costs you is PATIENCE, and not even that much of that.
