Han Solo Movie Now "Nearly All" Reshoots Proves Ron Howard Should Have Shot First

GamesRadar+ has the story.

Star Wars has caught a bad case of reshoot-itis. Symptoms include blurred directorial vision, hair falling out and, in the case of the Han Solo movie, a sudden loss of money if insider reports are anything to go by. This wasn’t just a cut-and-paste job after Chris Lord and Phil Miller’s firings either – it’s essentially a completely different movie under the helm of new director Ron Howard.

Star Wars News Net’s Resistance Broadcast podcast (via Screen Rant) has spilled the beans on what’s been going on behind-the-scenes on the reshoots. Two quotes stick out. First, the movie is now “nearly all” from the reshoots. Lord and Miller’s cut has been confined to, probably, that great big ditch in the desert where they buried those god-awful E.T games in the ‘80s.

If that’s the case, then it makes sense that Michael K. Williams had to leave the movie due to scheduling conflicts and you’ve got to wonder just how close the movie ends up being to its original idea. No one wants a horrible mish-mash of a script that doesn’t mesh with a completely fresh vision.

More worryingly for Lucasfilm’s coffers, the reshoots also allegedly cost “twice the budget.” When you think about Star Wars: Rogue One only being salvaged from considerable reshoots, and ending up costing a total $200m overall, you’re bound to be looking at something north of that figure.

It's Han Solo. It could be worse than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and it'll make a billion dollars. Outside of a "R" rated Boba Fett movie it's about as good as sure a thing as it gets for Star Wars.

I fell asleep in the theater during Crystal Skull. THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE NOR SINCE!!!
Actually, I fell asleep SEVERAL times during that movie.

The article is interesting because they assume that Rogue One was only salvaged by the reshoots, when most indications from all the missing footage seem to be that the movie was totally destroyed by the reshoots. It went from a AAA blockbuster action/war film to a B- Level bland summer movie hardly worth watching the first time let alone holding up to repeat viewings like the original trilogy.

I wouldn’t be shocked if this is the same situation. While I enjoy Ron Howard’s films, they are often slow, heavy on stale dialogue and seldom have any outstanding performances. In a lot of ways he is the perfect middle-of-the-road director for the Disney Star Wars films, but it’s still not a good sign for this movie.

The rumor was that the original movie was more of a comedy and less of a fluffy summer action film. Now it will be a 3-hour bore-fest? Not sure that’s an improvement. Ron Howard took the story of Moby Dick and made it dull, he took auto racing and made it dull. He’s the wrong guy for an action film.
I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.

Evil, Rush was a fantastic film, and Ron did Willow, so I'm not so worried.

I am guessing we will get a Boba Fett scene along the lines of the Vader scene in Rogue One.

I never thought this movie was a good idea. I don't mind side stories in SW. I enjoyed rogue One. Just not with any of the big 3 from the 4-6. I am sure it will make money but the prequels and the transformers movies make money doesn't mean they were good.

Maybe the trailer will blow me away and it will be a good flim. I doubt it but maybe.
