Nine Things About Star Fox Zero from Miyamoto

Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down with TIME to discuss Star Fox Zero in detail. Apparently, the game is neither a sequel nor a prequel...but a reimagining of the N64 classic Star Fox 64 that will focus more on the story than in past entries.

Quote:

The game itself is not a Star Fox ‘4’ or ‘5’, and it’s not a new spinoff. It really is going back to the roots, and that’s where the ‘Zero’ comes from.”

“For the Star Fox story, what’s really important are the relationships between General Pepper and Andross and Fox and his father. I didn’t want to try to tell a new story, so by keeping those relationships at the core, then going back to the Star Fox 64 story framework, we’ve added quite a bit of story to that and introduced the idea of these teleporters. The teleporters have an important role both from a story as well as a gameplay standpoint, and that’s allowed us to strengthen the original story that existed in Star Fox 64.”
The full interview, which is quite meaty, can be found here.

I only know one thing, not nine things: I'm not buying it.

Engh. There's a whole age bracket of kids 15 and under who have probably never played Star Fox despite knowing Fox from Smash Brothers. Nintendo doesn't necessarily need you or me.

Although I think it looks cool.

Here's what we know: The game has not looked good a single time it's been displayed.

Look good in which way? Like a good game? It's a Star Fox game. I've always found them to be fun to play, and the challenges add replay value to a rather fun game. (It's no Half-Life 2, but they've always been worth playing)

Visually? It's on the Wii U and has a basic art style, which Star Fox has always had. What the fuck are you expecting?

I'd bet money it'll be more critically successful than something like HAWX 2. At worst, it'll be another solid exclusive for the Wii U. And either way, there's no denying it looks better on both counts (as a better game and visually) since the E3 build.

This franchise, like many Nintendo's other franchises, is feeling really stale. I have no idea how it even got the green light when there is Metroid, FZero, Waverace etc just sat on the shelf year after year.

Ever since I saw the first trailer I knew i wasn't buying it.

You are absolutely right. You've also doubled my knowledge on this title!

Ninty lost their way with the ground combat. Tanks weren't fun enough to bother.

The Landmaster was great in SF64, and you didn't have any Landmaster levels if you want the hard story path anyway. You did have to deal with that annoying Blue Marine level though... hope that doesn't make a surprise reappearance.

If you mean Star Fox Assault by ground combat, then yeah that was pretty terrible. That game also wasn't made internally by Nintendo. They let Namco handle it, and those guys had some crazy idea for a Star Fox themed Halo clone that turned out awful. As far as I'm concerned, there hasn't been a proper Star Fox game since 1997, which was the last Nintendo developed title.

I mean both. All my time with the Landmaster was mediocre at best, would rather be flying.

But as for SF-Ass, that should be right out.

If they're going to do Star Fox right though, ugh, it's hard to even imagine how they could do it and remain within the SF paradigm, yet being Nintendo they won't leave that paradigm.
