Wii U Production Ends Worldwide

GameSpot has word that Nintendo has terminated production of the Wii U. The system has sold 13.56 million units since it was released in 2012.

Quote:
[UPDATE] A spokesperson for Nintendo confirmed to GameSpot that "Wii U production has ended globally."

The original story is below.

Wii U production has officially ended in Japan, Nintendo has announced. This was confirmed in an update on the company's Japanese website, as translated by Kotaku.

The end of production is only for Japan. GameSpot has reached out to Nintendo of America in an attempt to find out what the status of Wii U production is.

This is no surprise, as Nintendo confirmed last year that Wii U production would end soon in Japan. At the time, Nintendo also said that, as of November 2016, it had sent all of its Wii U shipments to North American retailers for the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2017.

So now that they've ended manufacturing of the console in Japan, at current sales rates they should be through with excess inventory by, oh...<back of the napkin calculations>...2025.

Super Mario 3D world, Yoshis Wooly World, Splatoon, SSB, Pikmin, etc.

Great games. Must plays.

Check out Metacritic. Some amazing games for this short-lived console. It's reminding me of the dreamcast. Not a huge library, but mostly all good.

I don't own a Wii U, but seriously considered getting one for "Pikmin 3", "Xenoblade Chronicles X" and "Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker". I personally never understood the appeal of "Splatoon" and downright disliked playing "Splatoon 2" at a recent Switch event. Granted, they didn't have the motion and analog controls fully figured out then, but still: You're running around as hipster-squids, doing Tom Sawyer's work over and over and over again. Where's the fun in that?

If there is a collectible edition, sure. Otherwise don't bother. The Dreamcast launched in 1998 and today, not quite 19 years later, is worth a whopping $400 when "New in Box" and including shipping. A much, much rarer case than either the Dreamcast or WiiU, a Sega Saturn LAUNCH edition, new in box and VGA graded (For what that's worth) for a mere $1950, all in. While that greatly exceeds inflation, it's similar to gold appreciation over the same period with the bonus of effort and being far more difficult to sell.

Video game (Or any other medium) collecting, unless you have some high holy grail that other than your basement doesn't exist yet is desired by everyone, is not going to turn a profit worth considering. Consider MJ's NTSC64DD or the Nintendo Playstation as desirable, everything else is just kid's stuff.

But what about the truckload of sealed "Panzer Dragoon Saga" boxes that sit in my basement?

I think he just meant that he'd pick up a spare tablet controller in case his breaks at some point. I can imagine these things to be a little more fragile than the average controller (I think I never broke a controller or joystick since the Amiga days)...

You mention Pikmin 3 and Treasure Tracker. Those are the two games i played the most. Pikmin is so good once you get into the flow of it. Challenging to.

You right on the DC. I got mine dirt cheap mint in box 5 years ago. I guess i don't do any speculating with video games i buy them to show off in a game room one day. But there is a good and bad time to buy.

That warehouse of PAL PC Engines that was found about 5 years is a good example. There were so many they were selling for $100. Now they are $300. I of course didn't get one..

The Panasonic Q is another holy grail for me. Used to be around 300. Now
they are 600 and up.

Well that may end up being a benefit of the Wii U having such a crappy install base. They can re-release the games for the Switch and they're basically brand new to almost everyone.

I agree it has great games, but all sequels ive played before and will play again.

the 3ds does a good job of having all the games on the wiiu, and has its own handful of exclusives.

Im not sure which to play next between xenoworld 3ds monster hunter 4, and the retro zelda one, but im still finishing the latest fire emblem conquest with most of the dlc classes (not all)

SOSO many games on PC and 3ds, my other consoles are not even connected right now. and travelling this month.

You just can't stop can you? I think you hate Nintendo more than you hate liberals. Or even more than Anenome loves Bloodborne.
