Hellblade Reviews "a masterclass of atmosphere"

Hellblade is short. Like, I've taken longer shits short. So I will wait for it to go on sale for $20.00 or less before buying this game.

Per the IGN review, "6-hour playthrough." Additionally, "dying too many times (in or out of combat) will erase your save-game." I guess this is their mechanic to lengthen the game?

I can't imagine paying more than $15 for such a short game. It seems that its main (only?) selling point is aesthetics, which is far less important to me these days.

Perma-death? No thanks. Even if it's unlikely, it's still there. And apparently the auto-save system can screw you if you miss something (see this Jim Sterling video review). I'm not a fan, and I wasn't a fan of that with adventure games in the 80's/early 90's, so I will probably be skipping this one.

I've paid more for less and the trailers look fantastic but I will wait for one of the less corrupt sites to review it before I jump. I like how EGM goes to the extreme saying it's not a 70 hour blockbuster some might expect...

70 hour "blockbusters" are few and far between. Most blockbusters rarely clock in over 15 hours for a campaign and run $60 so I don't know what they're smoking. $30 for a quality 6 hour game doesn't seem that out of line and this one has a decent pedigree.

It depends on how much game there is. So far, I have seen a lot of atmosphere, but not necessarily a good game. This is why I am hesitant to give them more than $20.00 at this time.

Watched someone play this on Twitch last night, I was legitimately bored after 15 seconds of gameplay. The attack animations and sounds have a weird disconnect, making it seem like you're swinging around nerf toys and combat in general is ridiculously repetitive, relying heavily on spamming the same counter-attack animation over and over. And, I'm not sure what difficulty the guy was playing on, but enemies just would. not. die. One group of 3 enemies took upwards of 10 minutes to defeat not because they were difficult, but because they took an absurd number of hits and revived themselves on-death (they did this 4-5 times each).

As for this "masterclass of atmosphere"? It's some of the edge-lord-iest storytelling and visuals I've seen in a while, complete with a hooded bad guy who's only capable of speaking in a nearly incomprehensible voice-morphed monotone. "Your mother defied the gods and now you will suffer too", "you can't save anyone", "you don't even know what is real", "blah blah blah".

Also, to quote the EGM review: "Senua herself is just stunning to look at, from her character model, to her design, to the way her face and body act or react". This is actually laughable, the quality of Senua's (the main character) facial animations are on-par with Mass Effect Andromeda on release day. Her eyes bulge out like she's some humanoid insect (and are unnaturally vibrant), her mouth can't decide if it wants to cry or grin, and her lack of eyebrows just makes her look that much more bizarre. Some of the tech might be impressive (mostly wrinkles being added in new place, like the bridge of the nose), but I found myself laughing at her expressions more than anything.

my wife really wanted it, so I pre-ordered it last weekend. It installed last night. If I get a chance to play it tonight while she's out, I'll write something up on here later.

And as far as shits longer than six hours (if that is the play time) how did you get off of the bowl afterwards? My legs would be asleep...

The "perma-death" is more or less a bluff; you effectively have to do extremely poorly multiple times in a row - within the same checkpoint, essentially - for it to even become a possibility, let alone actually happen.

You'd either have to be quite terrible at the game, or try to intentionally activate it.

Resorting to mass face shots for marketing is a sure indicator there's nothing home. If it had come out years ago people would have bought it just for the box art. And reviewers would have given it high marks for the box art.

My wife played it for about a half hour so far. It starts sooooo slooowwwww.....

Combat looks pretty basic so far.

A little pricey to call this a $30 game, but we'll see where it all ends up.

They are really pushing the "crazy" in this one. They tell you up front to play wearing headphones if you can. I'll check it out with the PlayStation Gold headphones and see if it makes a difference, but up to this point, the pacing is pretty slow.

Huh, well that doesn't make much sense. Why even have it in the game at all then? Why devote development resources to a feature that people will probably never experience? Let alone a feature that few people would probably want to experience?

Note that I'm not saying this "perma-death" thing is bad, it's just not for me. And it's questionable as to why they even bothered with it at all if it really is as rare as you say.

Honestly, I think it boils down to the fact they can honestly say they have something unique and noteworthy like permadeath.

I just played it for about 45 minutes. Haven't even got to any combat yet. I'm playing it at max settings in 4k, and it's REALLY good looking. The graphics and the developer's pedigree are what piqued my curiosity enough to buy it. $30 is pretty cheap nowadays for a game with this type of graphics, so I don't mind. The schizophrenia aspect is interesting, there is constantly voices whispering in the background.

I can't recommend it yet, though. Although interesting and gorgeous, it's been slow. We'll see how it goes.

Well, I've put a few hours into the game, and I'm bored with it. Sure it's a good looking game, and runs great on my PC, but it lacks in so many other ways.

Welcome to every character action game ever done by Ninja Theory. Great looking graphics with mediocre gameplay/combat.

They are just not good at these types of games yet they keep on trying, bless them for it. Their combat design is average to middling: never quite feeling right, responsive, and satisfactory.

Case in point: their attempt at DMC-- the combat was so bad they called in some local DMC players to fix it up for them.

But then again, no one talks about their take of DMC.
