The bottom line is this... The stories of game devs putting in massive amounts of hours isn't new, hell it has been a story I've read repeatedly for over 20 years. It's one thing to want to be a game developer, and another to actually research that career path.

If you want to play with the big boys and girls then you have to put in the time. I didn't help a 2 million dollar business grow to 4 million this last year by sitting on my ass.

What about work/life balance???? You have to make priorities, and sleep less. I still make it to the school events, and we make sure to have meals together when we can. I still find time to get 20 minuets to game every day, and I set aside a couple hours a day to spend time with my kids and wife (teenagers).

This is no different than long haul truckers, guys deployed in the military, oil rig workers, doctors, CEOs ect...

Would I like to do more One Quarter One Play articles, or finish the game I'm making on the Commodore 64??? Yes, but they fall short on my priority list.

Very well said Bearded, people should know by now what they're signing up for getting into this industry. It hasn't changed since the beginning really.
