Jessica Chobot is much hotter than the IGN girl.

I dislike when a movie is given points for the diversity of the cast rather than simply the quality of the acting and characters.

I get to see the movie Friday and can't wait.

I'm not going to give anything credit just for being diverse but this movie has Donnie Yen. His moves are pretty damn diverse.

I agree with all points.

We can see it's a diverse cast by looking at the trailer. I think that's great. But I don't need to be reminded that it's great. And as Chief said, Donnie Yen. Gimme' blind pseudo-jedi!

Slow start but epic ending 2 old (dead and old ) CGI human characters was like real people but they have a lot of work to do in the face animations :P )

Diversity plays a factor in "the quality of the characters".

People like to see themselves represented in media. Fiction plays off of an individual's relationship with their world. Thusly diversity plays a tangible roll in people's enjoyment of media.

It's just the way the world works.

I read a really interesting article by a guy who had red hair about how he always immediately bonds with and supports any character in a film with red hair. It doesn't make an appreciably difference in how he views a film, but it's something he notices. Now take something like children watching a film and it becomes more extreme. Kids like watching movies with kid protagonists. It makes it more relatable to them and their world. They don't really care if the adult actor is the best actor on the planet. It's irrelevant. He's not a kid.

On a superficial level, I can very much see relating to a character that looks like you but I tend to bond much more with characters who believe, think, and act in manners as I do, or even better, in ways I might aspire to. Sometimes, much of the time even, this is not the one who looks like me.

The problem with going for diversity is not necessarily the idea but rather the execution in our entertainment. It's so often done in vapid and hollow ways but it's treated as a central focus at times. A movie doesn't owe the audience diversity as much as it owes the audience a good story and good characters. Diversity can certainly be built into that but the good story is a much more important ingredient. They're not mutually exclusive of course but they're often not mixed together well either.

I agree with you completely that a film does not owe the audience diversity. But I think Disney is obsessed with diversity not out of some sense of a moral imperative but purely because it believes it impacts it's financial bottom line.

How do you grow the brand of Star Wars when it's got nearly a 100% penetration and hold on straight white men? You put some women in it. You put some brown people in it.

I think there's a lot of people who don't understand how utterly aggressive lack of diversity is.

I've always said that there is absolutely nothing racist about the most popular Marvel characters being white. Marvel comics were created by white people. I only makes SENSE that they would create stories and characters that are like they themselves. But when you create a marvel UNIVERSE where thousands of people get super powers through freak, random accidents and they are ALL white? That suddenly becomes aggressively racist, even if it's not intentional.

Star Wars is the same way. When you create an entire GALAXY and it's filled with nothing but white people? Even the desert planets? You're making a statement even if you're not meaning to make a statement.

Speaking of Diversity, did you see that Netflix dumped Marco Polo? The creators bragged and bragged and bragged about how diverse their cast was and in the end the show was a flop that cost Netflix a $200 million loss.

Guess that diversity isn't a big seller, eh?

It works when it makes sense but when I'm watching Doctor Who and they go back to Roman times and the General has a black Centurion it just looks stupid.

No, I think YOU do not know what it means.

Racism is, quite simply, the belief that certain races are superior to others. When you create an entire UNIVERSE and populate it with 99% of one particular race, 1% with another race, and zero percent with any other races, how are you NOT making that claim? Intentionally or unintentionally?
