Square-Enix's Octopath Traveler Review Roundup

Square-Enix just released their anticipated JRPG, Octopath Traveler, a Nintendo Switch exclusive. The art direction of the game has garnished attention, and JRPG fans have been hyped through the release of 2 demos, patiently wait for the game's release date tomorrow.

The review embargo has lifted, and the scores are promising.

Quote:
Eight travelers. Eight adventures. Eight roles to play in a new world brought to life by Square Enix. And now, you can enjoy all of them in the new demo. Step into the shoes and live the stories of each of the eight travelers and freely explore the world of Orsterra. Then, carry your choices and adventure into the main game with save data transfer.

Use each character’s special abilities in and out of battle. Break through enemy defenses by discovering and targeting weaknesses. Store Boost Points with each turn and then spend them at strategic times to strengthen abilities, chain attacks, or provide aid. Choose the path you wish to walk and discover what lies beyond the horizon.
  • Explore multiple, distinct RPG adventures in a world created by Square Enix
  • Choose from eight characters, each with their own distinct story
  • Deep, strategic turn-based combat with a layered battle system
  • Visuals inspired by retro RPGs, brought to life with modern touches and a rousing, dynamic musical score
Metacritic aggregate - 8.5
IGN - 9.3/10
Nintendo Life - 9/10
GameSpot - 8/10
Eurogamer - Recommended
NintendoWorldReport - 9/10
Twinfinite 4.5/5

Finally a game I'd actually not mind playing, despite not liking most JRPGs

I was hearing some mixed things online. Like it didn't feel like a 60 dollar game.
Watched some people play it on YouTube. Looks pretty good to me. If it not 90 hrs long ,that is not a big deal with me.

Glad to see it reviewing well. If I happen to catch a good deal on a switch I may have to get one.

Enjoying it so far. There are absolutely things I would change about it, including the frequency of combat, but on the other hand mechanically it is super solid, and a couple of the characters are very interesting. The fact that you are allowed to explore the game as you will is big for me. So is the fact that I've been playing since launch and still haven't gotten my full party yet (2 more to go).

My only real complaint is that the way these characters are woven into the story isn't always seamless. But so far the only one I wouldn't see as plausible to join the party would be the thief character since he is very adamantly a loner when asked to join.
