Star Wars Battlefront 2's 'Pay-To-Win' Concerns Are "Hard To Dodge," Says Dev

Star Wars Battlefront II's open beta ended last week after giving players the chance to try out the game's new weapons, maps, and heroes. However, much of the discussion surrounding the game has focused on its microtransactions, loot crates, and Star Cards. Battlefront II will give away things like maps and character DLC for free, but it will use a loot box-style system for unlocking various upgrades, leading to some fans accusing the system of being 'pay-to-win.'

In an interview with GameSpot, EA said people's fears are "understandable," at the same time as calling the accusations "hard to dodge."

Offering his take on people's concerns, Chris Matthews (art director at EA Motive, the team behind Battlefront II's campaign) said: "Right now there have been games that exploit players and there have been games that have done it in better ways."

He continued: "DICE [developer of Battlefront II's multiplayer] has taken great care to make sure that Star Cards and the way they work give you more options in battle. Terms like pay-to-win and stuff like that are hard to dodge, but the guys are doing a really incredible job of trying to balance that system.

"[The response] is not annoying because we love the fans. We're gamers and we're trying to make something that's super-compelling that everybody's going to enjoy, but, you know, it's understandable."

Game publishers are realizing they can exploit their customers and the customers will embrace it. It all started with Horse Armor, and here we are at loot crates. Now Activision is trying to patent a technology to put newbies in games with advanced players with cool things to make the newbies want the cool things. After buying the cool thing, they then put those players in matches where they will win a lot, thus making them think that buying that $DLC was good and encouraging them to buy more. That's called subliminal advertising and it's supposed to be illegal (or so I thought).

Is there anything they won't do to make a buck? Probably not.

Why are people still buying these games. Until you vote with your pocketbook and say no to microtransactions, It is going to continue to happen and get worse.

It is Star Wars OK I get it. But just bypass this game for something else.

I'm just happy they actually added a campaign this time. Optimistically RENTING it.

Horse armor and other cosmetic dlc are optional and not pay to win. They are mostly harmless. Why are people still Pissed about horse armor?

Loot boxes are the worst. Random BS like loot boxes or random loot from a time consuming raid is why I am buying fewer and fewer games.

Because it literally paved the way for every single DLC scheme that is in existence today. It used to be you played a game and were rewarded for challenges with things like alternative outfits or even characters, but now you just straight up to pay for them and have no means of getting them otherwise.

Fighting games are just a shit show of DLC while every other game is a shit show of Season Passes that usually add marginal features and benefits but are a third of the price of the game.

I only tolerate them when the game is absolutely free to play. But if you are charging me a full price up front, get your loot boxes out of my game. Just give me standard loot drop RNG. I feel much better seeing shit dropping in real time versus hoping that every couple of hours of gameplay I get a chance to open a lootbox that has a high chance of giving me three shit items.

If it's free to play I can deal with it if balanced well. Random BS in a full price game is not alot of fun for me. You like it good for you I guess.

I like them because it is a constant stream of extra goodies for you to earn. Sure, most of them are crap or duplicates and people who pay cash can earn the good stuff way faster, but the normal progression system where you just unlock everything after a few play sessions and then there is nothing else to earn isn’t a very good system.

I do agree with the idea that it works way better in free-to-play games where you aren’t paying for the game, but I want loot systems to be like Destiny 2 or Diablo III where there is a constant stream of cosmetics to unlock.

My concern with Battlefront II is that there just won’t be enough items in these crates to make the system worth the hassle.

Getting your 20th “Star Card” that gives you a 10% XP bonus in your next match is kinda a worthless item.
