Sony to Compensate PSN Users with a Discount Code and 5 Day Plus Extension


Sony has announced it will compensate PSN users for the lengthy downtime over the Christmas holiday, with a 10 percent discount code and a five day extension to their Plus membership.

Since access to PlayStation Network was impacted during the holidays, we wanted to show our appreciation for your patience by offering all PlayStation Plus members that had an active membership or free trial on December 25th a membership extension of five days. The extension will be automatically applied, so no action is necessary to receive the extension. We will post additional information here on PlayStation.Blog when the extension becomes available. If your membership or trial ends before the extension is available, you will receive five days of Plus to enjoy once the extension becomes available (we will notify you when).

In addition, sometime this month we will announce that for a limited time, we will be offering a 10 percent discount code good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase in the PlayStation Store as a thank you to all PSN members.

This discount can be used toward content available on PS Store including blockbuster new releases, award winning indie games, game add-ons and season passes, and an enormous selection of TV and Movies.
Wow, a whole ten percent discount code for me! And a whole five days of PSN Plus! err... Will those five days be days that PSN is working, or days when it's down?

10% is nothing. Especially considering that the last time they apologized for down time they gave everyone two free games. Compared to that, this is just sad.

I don't see this as much of a favor.

Of course they should extend PSN subs for the downtime.

Second, to reap this "compensation", you have to spend more money -- this is doing them a favor more than it is doing you one. A 10% checkout discount is nice and all, but I would have rather seen a free game offering or more time added back than was lost (two weeks, for ex.).

That was four weeks of downtime though, right? heh Maybe they have some sort of convoluted discount algorithm in play, relating downtime and value of compensation.

The 5-day extension is pretty weak. The discount is whatever--though I think store credit would've been most appropriate--but they should've at least given subscribers a free month. The extension doesn't really amount to any "tangible value" until your final month of subscription. It's kinda worthless.

I'd prolly be kinda annoyed about it if I were a PSN+ member.

Exactly. The sub extension was a given. The discount is a slap in the face.

Here's the thing about comping days for days lost. I was on vacation the days the service were out and had planned to play a bunch.
Vacation days of PSN lost are worth a lot more to me than general days.
And a make good that requires me to spend money is weaksauce.
