Evil Avatar's Indie Garage - Overlooked Gems

Welcome to Evil Avatar's Indie Garage, a fortnightly (or when pwnophobia gets around to posting it) article written by jigsawhc, owner of XBLA & XBLIG Ratings, detailing the Microsoft Indie Games that you should be playing.

Each of these four titles takes a genre we're familiar with changes things up a little.

Hey folks, jigsawhc from XBLA & XBLIG Ratings here. I’m going to be breaking down some of the best Xbox Live Indie Games every couple weeks.

Overlooked Gems

Today I want to take a look at some games that may have been overlooked but are really fun for fans of their respective genres. One of my favorite parts of Xbox Live Indie Games is that developers are free to explore specific game mechanics within their genre. Each of these four titles takes a genre we're familiar with changes things up a little.

Ancient Trader
Price: $3 / 240 Microsoft Points (try the demo)

There are not a lot of strategy games to be found in the Xbox Live Indie Games and even fewer that support playing multiplayer over Xbox Live. Yet, Ancient Trader is not only a fun strategy game with support for playing locally or over Xbox Live, but also fairly simple to learn. It is family friendly and pretty really nice looking for what is essentually a board game. If you like strategy games or want something to play with the whole family this is definately worth a look.

I Accidentally...In Space! Ep1
Price: $1 / 80 Microsoft Points (try the demo)

I'm not sure I've ever played a game that merges platforming withs vertical shoot'em ups before this so I was not sure it would be any good. After playing the first couple levels I was hooked. The higher you can get with the platforming the better score you can earn, but the combat is pure shoot'em up. As you would expect there are numerous difficulty levels and weapon power-ups. The challenge of getting as high as possible without dying to get a higher score is really addicting.

Zombie Football Carnage
Price: $1 / 80 Microsoft Points (try the demo)

Using a football player to destroy waves of incoming zombies may seem like an odd mix, but once you start playing the horde style waves you find it just works. You goal is to get as many points as possible while avoiding the rushing enemies and collecting power-ups to help you survide. Will you play this for hours on end, probably not, but for the 30 minute chunks you do play it is a riot.

IonBall
Price: $1 / 80 Microsoft Points each (game demo)

I'm a fan of breakout clones but never have I played one that has a level mechanic like IonBall's. As you play you earn experience which you can the use to upgrade your paddle and abilities. In addition to the standard levels, which are quite challenging, there are bosses who fight back. It is well worth grabbing IonBall if you like the genere because the challenge and upgrade mechanics are really well done.

Yep, I loves me some jigsaw XBIG write-ups. He's probably pointed me to more game purchases than any other single source. That being said, I suspect Zombie Football Carnage will be mine later this evening.

Zombie Football Carnage really makes me wish my 360 wasn't deader than my love life.
