PC Gamer has the scoop on a new Mechwarrior title being developed by Piranha Games.
After two years of near-total silence about the fate of the MechWarrior reboot, Piranha Games have announced MechWarrior Online, a free-to-play, team-based multiplayer BattleMech sim. Itís also going to tell the story of the Battletech universe in real-time, starting from just before the Clan Invasion of 3050. Each day, players will do battle on behalf of the universeís major factions, and each day in the game will represent a single dayís action in the fictional Inner Sphere. It will go live in the second half of 2012.
MechWarrior Online (MWO) might be free-to-play, but MWO Creative Director Bryan Ekman and Piranha President Russ Bullock insist this is going to be a proper MechWarrior game in the tradition of MechWarrior 2 through 4, not a successor to the Xbox action game Mech Assault. Ekman says joystick support is a strong probability, and both call this a Mech sim.
Did something similar with an old Mechcommander league I used to play in. The league creator setup a system where people joined clans, merc's and houses on his website and replayed the Clan invasion. Setup a universe map and assigned planets to each unit and leaders could schedule invasions, hire mercs etc. Was a lot of fun, ended up with Oberon Confederation dominating. Hopefully this will be just as fun.
Awesome! I just hope the reboot goes through too. I want a Mechwarrior game with mechs that feel like mechs, in the 4th succession wars, pref with some kind of company command. Equip, buy, salvage, scrap mechs.
curious how they plan to deliver the experience. I'm guessing it'll be a bit like Global Agenda where the 'game' is just one big lobby to queue for matches. But i'm hoping they'll try to be a bit more ambitious.
